As some of you know I'm constantly watching out for the right car for my 1967 L78 Clone (to be exactly like my original '67 Deepwater Blue, M20 4-speed, 4.10 posi, black interior with bench seat car that I bought new). So, I'm constantly watching '67's for sale. Even though it's going to be a clone, I still prefer a 138 car to start with. I also would like a Kansas City car, which may be a bit hard to find as so many KC cars were rust belt cars. But, it doesn't hurt to "wish". A June or July '67 build would be my preference. I have an original '67 Engine block along with all date coded parts, etc. ready for the build. I'm sort of waiting until I find the right car to put it in.
Most cars I see for sale by dealers are much over-priced (at least that's what I believe). Recently there were two cars for sale, as a comparison:
1. Bolero Red, Black Vinyl Top, Black Bucket Seat Interior car on BaT. It is in PA, so I was somewhat interested. The car was a Freemont, CA build & it still had the smog pump setup, base engine I believe, surface rust on the bottom, and it's obviously a driver quality car. I wasn't thinking it would go for too much, maybe $40's. It went up to $43,000 but the reserve wasn't met. I believe that was all the money for this one, considering the condition. Of course you need to add 10% fee up to $5,000, as I recall per BaT's criteria. My guess is the guy wanted at least $50,000.
2. Bolero Red, Red Bench Seat Interior car on Mecum Auction - Harrisburg. Frame-off restored, and it looked to be extremely nice! It did sell but barely reached $55,000, when the seller lifted the reserve (or the auctioneer said reserve was off anyway). So with the 10% auction fee, the final sale price was $60,500. It was a 396/325 4-speed car with POP. Seemed to be well documented, and it was very nicely presented.
Now comparing the two cars, I believe car No. 2 was a valid price, maybe even a bit "low", because it was restored very well as far as I could tell from the photos. Car No. 1 was very likely over-priced (but the reserve which was not revealed). The dash had been hacked up for aftermarket stereo, with a cd player or some such thing in the glove box, There was yellowing of the plastic chrome around the radio and just looked very average in the photos. You know what I mean. Maybe the color combo held it back? There was a lot of "red" on that one!
I'm beginning to think the prices may be coming down a bit, but I just felt I'd throw this comparison out there and see what you all think?
Thanks for your thoughts!
