My chiropractor's laptop needed some attention. It was refusing to install any updates, and the troubleshooter didn't fix the problem. So, I decided to try and refresh Windows - no dice. I then created a Windows installation flash drive, erased the SSD, then tried to install Windows again - no dice. After posting on an HP forum, none of the suggestions were correct. I then decided to run Memtest86+ on the machine. It immediately started throwing errors. I shut it down, removed one RAM stick, then ran the test again. It started throwing errors immediately. I removed that stick, then reinstalled the other stick, and ran Memtest again - no errors. I shut it down, and booted from the Windows installation drive - Windows installed without any issues.

I am providing this information in case anyone runs into a similar issue. I have not seen a failed stick of RAM in many years, but it can happen.

BTDT. Sometimes the connectors on the MB don't make good contact and simply reseating the memory stick will correct the problem, and once I did have a stick go bad, but that was due to the laptop being overheated from the fan being clogged with years of dust.
