Refrigerants (Freon, Puron)

Well now it looks like I need to carry 3-4 cans of "Freon" R22 use to come in 30# of actual freon, R410a dropped to 25# now R32 & R454b are 20#, completely crazy with this crap, nothing was wrong with R410a except Dupont needed another patent refrigerant or refrigerants, prices are rediculous too

The 454b jumped from an outrageous amount of $450 to even more outrageous $950-$1,100 because of a tank mfg shortage, 5/16" Left hand thread tanks were being made wrong 🙄 its just a Big RipOff and we have to pass it on to the general public, I'm at $95 per lb 410a installed with a digital manifold, $195 lb 454b, $125 lb R32 I dont even want to mess with R22, 407c, 427a anymore, Adaptkit fixes it 😆

Very suspicious. How convenient that these "problems" all increased their profitability !

I also did my 1st R32 system yesterday, seems like a nice refrigerant and roughly same pressures as both 410a and 454b PS Goodman/Amana uses R32 in central systems but I dont like Goodman because of ongoing leak problems

So is Carrier going with both or just the 454b ?

I bought a 20# tank of R32 yesterday since I wasn't sure the 12k btu mini would have enough precharge, lowest price around here for a tank was $283

In the auto industry R1234YF is pushing out R134A, and at about 5X the price. It is my understanding that it contains propane. Propane by iteself is an excellent automotive refrigerant from a performance standpoint. but obviously not from a safety position.
The orignal a/c units designed by Willis Carrier (god bless his heart say Texans and Floridians every where!) used ammonia as a refrigerant, which was common into the '30s.
I still like R-12 though.

Should we be buying a 20 to 40 lb tank of 134a for backup ?
Or a case of 12 oz cans ?

$95 /case for 12 cans

Industrial still uses amonia for refrigerant, R32 and R454b both have propane, new air handlers have sensors if an indoor coil leaks it auto turns blower On and outdoor unit Off so it dissipates throughout the house because if it's in a smaller area than 130 ft.² it could ignite
