A new wave of Chevelles?

Two notes I forgot. Our Lakewood came from New Mexico and had a bit role in a movie with Val Kilmer. Images below. “A West Texas Children’s Story”. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446802/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_1_accord_1_cdt_t_56

In my 55 years with my wife (including dating), this is the only car (and I’ve had Corvettes, and Porsches, and a slew of muscle cars including a 1970 Mach 1 tribute to the car we dated in) my wife has ever cared for and loves to drive. It is a keeper.
There is a guy on YouTube, Matt’s Off-road Recovery, he is an avid collector of Corvairs. Just thought I’d throw that out there, he’s in Utah.

It's been over 5 years since Ive posted anywhere regularly. I used to put a lot of effort into my writings and layouts. Maybe I'm blind, but I liked posting a picture and having a description. Going to try it again. The picture below is from a warehouse that I had about 30 years ago. Sorry it's dark but the lighting was inadequate. In the top frame, the figure in the front is me, talking to Aaron (oldest son). We were body working my '72 U Code GMC Sprint and getting ready for paint. In the second frame, we had just brought his '71 SS back from paint. And in the third picture was another factory big block 1971 El Camino. It was dressed up as an SS and we undressed it and made it as close to stock as we could get it. If I had just bought that one and stopped, I'd have been much better off. Then the disease bites you. At one time I had 10 El Caminos from 1969 to the 1972 Sprint.

After Aaron had scrounged the junk yard, he didn't find suitable doors. So he drove to Shreveport Louisiana and purchased a set of doors off of FBM. He wanted them because they were rust free and complete with all the glass and window mechanisms.

He rebuilt the door hinges and installed them. I took a set of wheels and tires.

So I went up to Tyler for a work weekend with him where our objective was to get the car rolling and steering. Aaron in the left photo, Connor (youngest son) in the right photo.IMG_5221.jpegIMG_7750.JPEGIMG_8581.jpeg
About 2 weeks after I was there, it was time to relocate the car from the junkyard (simple vernacular) to its recovery station. The next pictures were from the day it was moved out.IMG_8587.jpegIMG_8589.jpeg
This is Aaron with the owner of the yard on moving day. They've become pretty good friends.

After over 50 years in that yard, this is it's new home until it will be driven on the street again. It's on a concrete pad in a big pavillion.

Last weekend, Aaron was fitting new floor pans. He got them fitted and will be welding this weekend.

The right side only needed a front patch.

The drivers side needed the full panel. You can see passenger side tacked.

I'll add more as I get them.

I have the engine at my house. I found a complete 454 for sale that had just been rebuilt for a drag truck. They decided to go LS and sold it. It has 781 heads and a cam larger than I would like. BUT, its a 4 speed so I'm going to try it. It's got a Lunati VooDoo.

I'll go through it and review the condition, then get it running and sorted out before I deliver it. My target for that is next spring.

That cam's not too rowdy 👍🙂

Thats not a bad cam at all for a stick 454. Is he butt welding or lapping the pans?
Funny you should ask as we debated that last weekend. I am a butt weld guy. He has a neighbor who owns a paint and body shop who he consulted. He told him to do a lap weld, because “it would be stronger” and seam seal it. I don’t know how much more strength is needed for a car with a full perimeter frame. It’s his project and effort. I’ll defer to his decision.

Considering the use of the car, sealed lap welds will be ok, and a lot easier. Its not like its a 100 point resto project. I am surprised that a pro wold approve lap welds though.

I *think* it’s because he’s primarily a Mustang guy. It was all in his “extra strength” comment.

The engine was built for a drag race Chevy Luv. They decided to install an LS3 into it instead. I bought the engine for this ‘69 Chevelle SS. Hope this helps.

Not sure what you meant ? He wants a drag race engine ?
I bought the engine off of Marketplace. The individual that I bought it off of had it rebuilt and installed the Voodoo cam for a Chevy LUV drag truck they race. It was never run before they decided to swap their idea to using a 6.0LS motor in the truck. The engine sat in storage for a few years before I bought it. I had detailed pictures from a borescope before I even went to look at it. Sorry for the delay and hope it helps.

No visible progress, he's been welding and fitting floorplans between a job, family and 3 kids in sports. I'm amazed he gets done what he has done.

We have another work date where I'm going back to Tyler after Halloween but before Thanksgiving. The goal is to replace the rear divider, package tray and dutchman's shelf with window surround. He has a rust free piece cut out of another car that is ready to go. Next will be trunk floor, again with a good salvaged piece. Then we will get to the glass areas. We want the interior sealed before next summer.
