1972 Chevelle Malibu. Placer Gold aka Goldie "The Story"

The trunk, fertilizer does wonders. I am not a body work person so I asked a recently returned Veteran to install a complete pan. He found really good metal on all of the pan except for the bottom and back of the trunk.

Well, my son lost interest in the project and poor Goldie sat with the frame in the corner and body on the dolly for a several years.

While it sat there I did work on the engine. It must have had a head gasket leak or cracked head because while sitting in the stand water got into a cylinder. The block was bored out 30 over I think. I replaced the cracked head, the machine shop went thru the heads, new cam bearings and crank polished. I rebuilt the engine, and cleaned all of the accessories etc. I cleaned the transmission, replaced the front, tail, modulator and selector seal. I replaced the rear axle bearing seals, all new brakes, bushings, shocks, springs, steering components. Everything. I put the engine and transmission on the frame and it sat for another couple of years.

I got to the point hoping a kid would get interested. No luck. My pictures are lacking, car parts were everywhere, no garage room. I thought about selling it. I didn't because I felt I made a commitment to get it done.

I had some major work I needed to do on the Excursion and I needed the garage room. I decided to see what I could do to marry the body and frame back up.

The first job was to POR15 under the body, so I pressure washed it:

Hey, that looks like a Cavalier in the garage.... I bought one for Lisa for Christmas in 1989. A very unremarkable car. Paint started peeling right at the 4 year mark and GM refused to fix it. I did a cheap paint job (one stage) and dumped it.

I told Lisa to pick anything on the lot, and that's what she picked. I even asked her if she wanted a Camaro, and the Cavalier is what she wanted.

It was a 93 Sunbird with a 3.1L V-6. It was fun to drive it around and handled well.
That car was a bear to work on and was always needing repair, I had it for about 10 years but it needed a new top, interior and paint/body work. It was getting hard to find parts for so I sold it. My son is still mad that I did.

Placer Gold

Ok, Placer Gold Code 53 is a very misunderstood color. The original color in enamel was very dull (roof top below):

But in basecoat/clearcoat it shines!

Placer Gold and Jade Green go together, a lot! Many Chevelle experts do not understand the relationship, Jade Green is everywhere, part of the reason is the Jade green assisted with the gold color. A very prominent Chevelle expert remarked this car had had the interior repainted because the front seat covers had been replaced. As you can clearly see it was factory.

Here are some examples of how deep the Jade Green is:

I continued on with the car knowing the bodywork was going to stop me. Unfortunately the car sat for a while, nothing being done to it. I was our of space in the garage, from all of the parts laying around. Over time I cleaned the dash, installed a dash harness I picked up at Chevellebration, Installed the restored A/C system and eventually bought an exhaust system.

I took the fenders, doors and hood for blasting, the blaster warped the hood. I had a Maaco smooth the fenders and doors, they did a decent job. I had them prime the parts and I installed them on the car.

I was at the point where I needed the car to move on its own. Sorry, no pics, I got slack. After getting the engine started, I was able to move it around.

As time passed by I thought about selling the car but I promised myself I would see it through.

I started to talk with Tom Rightler, he was starting up his own shop and I wanted to be on the list. We had a long talk in Ocean City, MD about what I needed, he brought me a hood and I traded him a new floor patch panel for it.

In mid 2020 Tom set me up and I took the car to him in late 2020, from NC to NJ.

Picks below are before I loaded her up.

Sort of back asswards but the old gold paint was hard to get off and the sun bleaching of the body required a blast. Yes, some blast got into the dash but all in all the stuff was contained.
