I have 19 new babies. They need to be kept at 95 degrees and drop the temp 5 degrees each week. This is their first box, when they outgrow it, they will move to a larger box, then a caged areas and when they are big enough and old enough they will be let loose to free range.

When my dad used to get chicks, 50 at a time, he'd put them in the coop with heat lamps & they would gather under the lamps & kind of rotate.
As they got bigger he would raise the lamps till they didn't need the heat. He didn't free range them, I don't think he wanted them running around the yard.

All of mine free range in a fenced yard. When they are little predators will get them, occasionally a grown one will get gotten in the yard. I have had chickens for many years, they are easy to care for compared to other farm animals.
