Turbo Time

I am installing a new stock Garret Turbo in the Excursion. The old one has 180,000+ miles on it and has been popping check engine lights. I had it off in 2 1/2 hours, not too bad. Going to do a few things while it is out like reseat the coolant filter hoses, and clean the oil up before I install the new one.

I have had it out before and the hardest part is lining the exhaust up.

Variable vanes stick, I know the unison ring has wear. I have had it apart 3 times to clean it, will throw a P0299 code, especially when towing when the vanes stick.

I talked to Thoroughbred Diesel, because I am stock they suggested the stock turbo.

Got up this morning and went right out to the garage. Truck was running by 12:30, test driven at 1:00. No issues installing except the belt. The dang thing is under so much tension I ended up pulling the engine crane out to pull the belt up so I could engage the tensioner kick stand.
My parents arrived at the house at 1:30, at 2:00 we all got in the Ex and went to dinner, a 90 mile round trip. Ran great!

I made a custom bar about 3' long to move the tensioner to take the belt off and on. Gave it to my son, but if he finds it, I'll take a pic of it.

Yeah, there is no clearance up there and a bolt on the pully doesn't really help. Not having anybody around to help with stuff I have to get creative.
