I Don't Call This a Breakdown.

Lost my alternator in the Excursion, barely made it home before dark. Was pulling a trailer full of farm implements and light started flashing on interstate. I decided to back road it home and made it the 40 miles. I carefully watched FICM voltage. I think the alternator was charging a little, most of the time held 12.5 on the Scan Gauge. It was a 7 year old DC Power 180 AMP unit.

I have a battery tender on the truck trying to give the AGMs more juice.

It made it home so no breakdown!

I just replaced the alternator (brand new) in the F250 6.0 before I gave it to my son, and the thing crapped out and killed the batteries. Put new batteries in and as soon as the new batteries were in the alternator was putting out a high pitched whine (engine not running), but as soon as you started it, it was charging just fine, so it was drawing when it engine wasn't running. Weird. So my son got the replacement (free), and it was fine after that.

My Odyssey AGMs held the FICM with the 12.6 the alternator was giving. I knew the lights would kill that so I am glad I never turned them on.

My son was at school when it happened, and I had bought the batteries at O'Reilly's, and they waited for him (after closing) to drive there so they could give him new batteries. That's what I call service, and they earned my business for life. The new alternator was Ford believe it or not. When he brought the alternator to Ford, they tried to tell him it was abused, and when I called up and told them I bought it and installed it and how old it was, they checked it out and sure enough it was bad, so they gave him a new one on the spot. Guess who had to install it.....again?

That stupid tensioner drive me crazy, alternator is easy otherwise

Called ficmrepair.com and inquired about another alternator. They asked for me to have it tested first just in case there is a wiring issue. I do have another alternator on my shelf in the garage for it, I can throw it on and test it too. It doesn't have the amperage output the diesel really needs.
FICMREPAIR.com are diesel electrical specialists, their FICM has done a good job for me as did the DCPower alternator. We are planning to have the truck serviced at their shop in Des Moines on our way out West.

I have the new alternator, new belt, tensioner, battery terminal clamps and larger battery interconnect cables. Truck is in the garage because it is supposed to be crappy weather tomorrow.

Well, found an idler pulley with a little too much play, dealer will have it on Tuesday. Sure, Oreilly's and Advance have an aftermarket replacement, I would rather have Motorcraft.
