Dash Paint

If you can find the spray max 2k I think it is more durable. It also has a adjustable spray tip with a nice pattern. I used it on my control arms and also my rear end. It’s the hot rod black. They may make a semi gloss not sure.

Spray-Max is great stuff. I've used their weld through primer, 2K clear, 2K epoxy & 2K urethane primer on various jobs over the years. You'll get excellent results with it if your prep is done thoroughly.

Same guy painted the ashtray & glovebox door and it looks like a pretty good match to what I want, it's actually Summit Chassis Black but was painted in 2017 and I don't have any more of it, I'll look for the Spray Max 2K Hot Rod Black, found it on Amazon and it's the correct 30% gloss that ChevelleStuff.net says is the factory finish, not that I care about a factory finish, I have a pk of 2 cans in my Amazon cart $56 but even with Prime wont get it till the 5th, before I pull the trigger ordering it I'm going to see if I can buy it local

If you haven't purchased those already, I'd go with the Rustoleuem Professional instead. The semi gloss black...sprays much nicer than Rustoleum's standard paints. And the semi black is great color match for most factory interiors. I used it on a '66-67 console & it came out great.

Wow, inflation is insane right now. About $20 a can ! But it's better to buy quality stuff than to do rework.

Lowes had it for $7 a can a few months ago. I'm sure it's gone up, but that price is stupid. Plus it's cheaper to buy in quarts if you have a lot of stuff to spray. Just thin it with acetone 2:1.

You're right, Lowes has it for $7. Home depot only has gloss and flat. I'm going to grab 3 cans at Lowes

Beth,

What are you spraying with these? I know Rick isn't into factory originality, but you might be. A better option for certain parts is having a paint shop mix you Dupont 88L. I used the rustoleum on that console because it has the pebble grain which cannot be easily buffed out. For parts like steering columns, lower dash housings & door tops, the Dupont or PPG factory codes are the better choice.

I tried the Rusty 2K Semi Gloss on a metal trash can and it's just too shiny, I pulled the trigger on the Spray Max 2 pk I had in my Amazon cart, $60  but it should look pretty good it's 30% gloss and that's what ChevelleStuff.net says the factory used, not that I care but the semi is just too glossy

I have used the SprayMax clear and agree it’s great stuff.
For other needs maybe consider getting a spray gun? Might be money ahead in the long run. You can just use single stage to make it easy. I bought this gun on Amazon to do small jobs on panels and like the swiveling paint cup. I’ve primed a lot of panels with it and spray the BC and CC on my dash and it layed out really good. (The rest of the car not so much but that was a different gun and a different clear).

The flattened clear coat that I put on my dash was forty some bucks for a quart. I like SprayMax but spraying with a gun is more cost effective.

I just used some 400 grit paper on the ashtray that you could see the sand paper scratches from other guy, think paint will stick to 400 ok? Its what I had other than hardware store medium or paint store 1200

I was going to paint my 68 Camaro dash with the SEM trim paint. Or the Rustoleum semi-gloss, which has more gloss than the SEM.

I always water sand stuff if possible. And knock the hard edge off the paper by lightly water sanding some clean metal before starting on the painted surface.

The Rustoleum Semi Gloss is pretty glossy IMO, I tried to find Hot Rod black in a spray can but nobody had it, the local PPG paint supplier mixes paint in an aerosol can that you push a button or something? that I bought 1 can of Argent for my new truck bumper that matched really well but it was fairly expensive IIRC $70ish? for 1 can or I would've done that, I think the Summit Chassis black was perfect and I had 2 kits for my car that would've been plenty to do the whole dash but didn't happen, I got nothing against smoking pot but do the job you're getting paid to do instead of puff puff ext primer on/primer off puff puff repeat, Oh well I didn't want to pay $20K for labor at a real resto shop

If I missed it, how or did you prep it for paint? I took all my stuff to bare and put a self etch primer before I put the paint.
When it was first prepped it was at the body shop he didnt strip it all to bare metal and I think that explains some rust in the lower pas side bottom, Im thinking anything that took getting on your back to look up got minimal care? Ive found a few fender bolts missing that I installed but the last 8-10 days of spraying primer on the body then sanding off and wanting more primer and paper was getting to the point of ridiculous and seemed he just needed a pay check instead of finishing what he knew should be finished and when I asked if this was all thats left priming and sanding the body he said Yes so I pulled the car out, I should've looked closer but I was just getting aggravated but we're still friends WTH ya know and it was a friend owned shop that this body guy works at so I paid friends shop rent , elec and body/mech hourly pay, same place we did the engine swap last year, the dash was supposed to be all finished there though
