what to do with engine and trans?

I'm running a 6.0 in my 67 with a 4L60 and a 3:50 9" - I absolutely love this drivetrain. I'm running a mild LS6 cam, LS2 intake with a 90mm TB and ported 853 heads with shorty headersand a full magnaflow exhaust with an X pipe. Plenty of power and knocks on 23mpg.
That's about what I have in my Camaro; LQ4 6.0L, LS3 heads, 4l80e trans with 3:55 gears. And the small GM hot cam; should be about 460 hp.
Overpaid can come out a lot cheaper by buying a complete engine/trans and harness. That's probably what I should have done.
Forgot about the Front-End-Accessory Drive ! Mine cost about $1300. Ouch !

The guy that sold me the combo recommended a Cletis McFarland Bald eagle NA cam, sounds wicked from some videos I saw. What cam do you guys recommend? FYI not planning to boost the car for the foreseeable future. I do have the budget to do heads but since the engine will be out of the car I figured doing a cam and converter would be a no brainer....

The only thing I am kinda maybe regretting a little is I did a 4.10 gear with my 9 inch. I mean it is a 9 inch so no big deal to change it out just more money lol

I will run it with the 4.10 see how it is, if it was not bad with my powerglide I am sure I can survive with the OD in the 4l60

Flat tappet cams suck IMHO and you give away 25 hp. But rollers cost $300 more minimum.
I like a decent idle and good torque so 220-225 intake duration and 230-235 exhaust duration. Stay close to .510-.525 lift
If you are running an automatic, a big cam is a giant headache.

I have a T56 6 speed I need to sell that has a .5 overdrive ; perfect for a 4:11 gear. $1800. You will need to enlarge around the shifter hole

Yea for sure, eh, maybe for now with budget in mind I should just run it as it sits.

What are the hidden “cost” of a budget LS swap?

Assuming a junky yard running 5.3 with DIY harness ….
-motor mounts
-oil pan
- fuel tank, return line, fuel pump
- stand alone trans computer, if you are using the auto trans with the motor
- enlarging trans tunnel
- drive shaft
-electric fans
-is there a plug and play gauge package that looks right in a 67? Dakota?

A "standard" swap kit which is oil pan, headers, crossmember and engine mounts is about 2k dollars.. Now as I said I am trying to see if I can get cheaper parts and peice something together. Holley Terminator X max is about 1500. So right there 3500 on top and that doesn't account for drivershaft, efi fuel tank and radiator / fans.

this stuff adds up, so I guess it is not "hidden" just costly!

Cross member has to be hacked up? I’ve seen it done but I thought they were doing it to avoid a costly oil pan

98-02 F-body is the only factory pan that will work in a Chevelle chassis, and even that is tight to the crossmemeber so it may or may not fit depending on engine position of your brackets.

There is another pan that "fits" but hangs really low... can't remember specifics, maybe Hummer H2?

Holley pan is the standard everyone uses now.
I used AutoKraft baffled road-race pan which was the best option when I started mine 12 years ago.

I wonder if the holley pan is even USA made, if it is china I think I will save some cash and try this one, dimensions almost the same. They also have one that is lower profile. This is the place I am planning to get the headers from. They got great reveiws from what I saw and each time I have called them I got a human within a minute. I love holley but man for such a huge company and money they charge for stuff they should be able to get to the phone quicker. Dammit guys hire more people or at least upgrade your phone system to have that we will call you back option! Sorry for the rant!

If I ever pull this MJ406 for any reason, Ill be notching my K-member and welding in a custom tubular one. I thought about doing it last year when I put this engine in and didn't because I was to excited to get it back together. At a minimum, notch the lower center section and tube it.

Add a FEAD (front end accessory drive) to arrange your ac, alternator and ps to clear the frame. If you are not using ac and ps, you may not need this.
My Holley FEAD was $1300.

I used stock F-body (98-02 Camaro) accessory drives, and made custom engine mounts to make the alternator clear the steering box, and notched the frame rail to clear the AC compressor.
I wouldn't recommend this unless you're willing to do a lot of cutting on your trans tunnel also.

Save your money and get a Holley 302-2 or 302-3. You can thank me later. That pan you linked will not work well in a chevelle especially if you want to turn. My 302-2 fits with ZERO issues in my 67.

Cleaned up the engine bay tonight, engine and trans will come next week so keep your eyes open for the build thread in the future. I don't plan for it to be a quick project since I need to allocate some funds for the supporting parts but little by little hoping for mid summer to be done. Famous last words!!! :)

Don't rush to get it done just for the sake of it, take your time and do it right. No shortcuts and you'll be golden.
