Fiberglass hood?

overpaid

Well-Known Member
So, honestly I am getting pretty sick and tired of asking a buddy to come over and help me take the hood on and off my car. Okay I have only had to do it 3 times but still! Once I did it myself and it was not bad taking it off believe it or not I managed but putting it back on alone would never happen. So I had this grand idea to buy a lift off fiberglass hood and I guess use 4 hood pins ( I hate the look of hood pins but I figured there are some low profile ones).

Any one been down this road? Thanks!

My ford ranger had a stock steel hood (XLT model) and I swapped it for a fiberglass one from a splash model and it was heavier (which kind of shocked me).

I have a Glasstek fiberglass hood on my '69 Chevelle.

Stock hood was 72.3 lbs
Fiberglass hood was 32.3 lbs before I modified it... never re-weighed it after.

Mine's about 2 ft. longer, I have no idea what it weighs.:D

Easy fix.... when they want to go out tell them it's dutch treat and see what their taste is like then.

When Lisa and I got together 35 years ago, I took her to McDonalds and told her this is the best I can do, if it ain't good enough, then this will be the last date. I was going through a nasty divorce at the time, so money was really scarce.

We've been married 33 years this year, and had lots of nice dinners since, but I definitely got the better end of the deal.

Boy, years ago I used to take those steel hoods off by myself, up to and inc. big old Impala hoods. The trick was you had to have lots of blankets so as not to scratch anything also wear gloves, then take all 4 bolts out and find a pole to prop the hood up temporary. This is the tricky part, while the hood is up slide it forward on the hinges and then rest the center of the hood on inside your belt buckle and you had better have strong stomach muscles and lift the hood up then take it off the car. Have not done it since the 80's as I have a nice helper now and certainly don't need it on the race car with the fiberglass good but the cowl one is kind of heavy.

I had an S15 with a small block and was removing the hood by myself alot. One day when i was putting the hood on by myself the hood shifted and the corner hit my windshield and busted it pretty good. :mad:That cherry picker gizmo would have saved me some frustration🤪

I think it's a great idea, and a break from ordinary. I've had this discussion far too often of late, that I'm truly getting bored with over the top restorations and we're lacking personality in our hobby. That's what started hotrodding.
