Mig welders?!

Extremely ! Not bad for an 18yr old wanting to start his own business and work hard. Now if we can keep him from moving west to Texas !

Yeah, my son gets his journeyman's card in 2 weeks (he's 24) and he's talking about moving to North Georgia where the pay is substantially higher. Lisa and I look at it this way.... it's his life and he has to live it. We're just here for support.

Anyone weld aluminum? My Hiller is a 220 machine but it’s old enough that they weren’t setting them up for spool guns yet. I could get a spool gun but you’d need some special controller box and it all cost a mint.
I went online and found a guy who sold a kit with a wiring harness to allow you to use a generic Chinese spool gun. The kit works pretty good but my welds look like ass. I guess I need to get a bigger gas bottle and practice more.
I've only MIG welded aluminum a handful of times. I would need more practice for sure. I remember we used pure argon & a spool gun.
Anyone TIG? Always thought about getting a Tig machine or trying scratch start Tig with a cheap HF stick welder but never pulled the trigger
I Tig weld almost all day long at work. We have both Lincoln & Miller. Both work fine. They are in the 250 to 350 amp range.
I prefer a Tig with a water-cooled torch, I've never seen a Tig without a high frequency starter. Scratch start contaminates your tungsten immediately in my experience.
I have a Lincoln square wave 255 w/ cooler in my garage.

A little bit not very good. Built a set of headers & exhaust for my Monte. A couple of alum projects. I started out with my miller thunderbolt doing scratch start.

Oh I forgot, I weld airplane parts at work. Sometimes help out for tooling. I'm certified for Tig welding 4130, 6061, 321 stainless, 17-7Ph hardened stainless, Inconel, waspaloy , 6al5v titanium.
Been doing this for 22 years

Thanks for all the great replies, sounds like if I wanna spring for the Miller why not but really sounds like everyone that has a Hobart of Lincoln is doing just fine. I am going to stick with Lincoln, thanks all!

I have an AHP tig welder, bought it 4 years ago and have not used it once. I need to learn how to set it up.

Back a few years ago when I was dreaming about getting a Tig, those alphatig welders were considered a fantastic machine for the price.

I bought my Vulcan mig welder at Harbor Freight and I think it was $650; just 4 years ago. Now it's $1000 !
I use 75% CO2-25% argon with it.
