Chevelle project update

Hooked up the battery to test electrical today. I have a blue light on the dash indicating high beams, and the starter bumps. Annnnnnnnd that ‘s it 😅. Going to start with the grounds, make sure I have them all. Do I need to ground the battery to the fender?

Body and frame.

So I’ve got ground straps connecting body, frame, and engine, and the battery ground is connected to the alternator bracket, similar to original. Should that be to the frame instead?

You can also install a ground strap on the same bolt on the back of the block and ground the frame.

Checked all the grounds, they all seemed good. Then I realized I hadn’t put the fuses in the panel yet 😂. Got tail lights and head lights, still no dash or climate. And the wiper switch is broken 🤬. I’ll get there.

But I do have the paint done up through heavy cut. Just waiting on a few parts to get it running

Wiper switches, just like headlight switches and most others in an old chevelle are usually just gummed up inside preventing contact. It's child's play to seperate them, clean, and relube with dilithium grease. Check continuity before reinstall back into dash and you're good for another 50 years. New switches aint what they used to be. Be careful when doing the autopsy, they have some little springs in there. A good chunk of white paper is always a good place to work over.
.....and to add a bit of laughter to yours, I tried to fire up the KTM for a ride yesterday after sitting all winter, wore the battery down and put it up till today. Today, same thing, so went to check spark.....plug wire was just laying beside the plug. IDIOT!

Got most everything working electrical wise except the dash. It’s an Intellitronix digital and it’s kicking my ass. The only thing working is the high beam indicator.

Had to crack the dash open to get a look. Power and ground are good, the only thing I can see that might be a factor is that the instructions called for the main power lead to be a keyed accessory and I have it connected to keyed ignition - the pink power wire that goes to the cluster on the AAW dash harness. Also, I connected the battery lead (which is supposed to keep a minimum of power for the clock) directly to the clock lead on the harness. Seemed logical.

Gurss I need to beak out the multitester.

The clock lead (full time power) if I remember correctly is a 5 amp fuse and that should be more than enough to keep the memory.

Yeah, I'd bust out the tester to make sure you're getting power from the harness (in keyed mode).

Spent a few hours tracking stuff down. All the light related stuff worked fine but everything that was keyed was not. I confirmed that by testing each fuse on the panel. Pretty simple trace to the ignition switch where the outgoing switched wire had pulled out of the connector. Looks to me like I put the wire in upside down and the little tab on the terminal didn’t have anything to click into and just pulled out when I put the dash bezel on. Looks like everything is working now although I do have to wire up the speedometer sensor that goes with the Intellitronix dash.

Gave it a go today. Cranks but no start. Did all the usual checks. Looks like I’ve got the plug wires off by two cylinders.
