Trans Am Worldwide To Introduce Modern-Day Chevelle Called The 70/SS

This car is out of reach to the average joe. I look at it this way I'm not a matching numbers guy by no means but if you put this car and a 70 LS6 car equipped with whatever creature comforts you could have ordered back then next to each other and said take your pic I would go for the 70 LS6. The same thing would apply to a new Camaro vs. a 69 BB Camaro or a new Corvette vs, a nice 67 Tri-powered coupe I'd go for the originals every time. These new versions of the old cars are out of my reach financially but I don't care because I lived when a car was a car and you can't replace those days.

Not bad. Bumpers are hideous. Another problem with the Camaro platform is unless you are 4'6" nobody can sit in the back seat so its basically a 2 seater.

Spoke with Mike about this at length yesterday when we stopped by for a visit, and he can elaborate as to his conversation with the designer regarding the bumpers. I personally thought the nose (hood and grill) were a bit exaggerated.

Yes I thought it was out maybe 2" as well. The angles were all there though some sharper. If you look at the rear bumper for example, all the angles and insets were there but represented as an angle and not such a smooth transition as the original.

On the bumpers, yes they stated there are works in place for a chrome. I never thought about it but there are issues now with getting real full bumpers DOT approved. Apparently DOT rules no longer allow just a chrome bumper as being enough for DOT crash test standards. Like new trucks with chrome bumpers. The new chrome bumpers are just a flimsy cover with the real steel / crash rated engineered bumper and required foam underneath. Since this is considered a new production car, it must have the current approved crash requirements. So to add a chrome bumper (like) with the DOT requirements requires some room for everything. Plus the extra room for mounting.

Also noted, was how to place the newer style sensors. Would it be in the chrome bumper or a facia. So there are some obstacles. I think everyone wanted to see a little more Chrome.

Jennifer noted the handles. She like the fact that they were indeed chrome handles, unlike some of these newer cars that are more shaved or recessed. The push button on these new handles are electric switched. When you grab the handle, you just touch the button with your thumb and they control the door poppers.

When they pulled back the cover, I immediately liked the 70 stacked grill with the stainless trim ! I think with chromed bumpers and a chrome strip on the rear view mirrors, that would add a subtle flair to the overall looks to tie it back to the original 70. I would have also liked a more traditional dash gauge set and A/C vents. A few more chrome accents in the dash.

Other things I liked, the use of actual badging and not painted or a decal. LED lighting.

But as I stated, we all have out original Chevelles for a reason.

Big thing for me is the price. I want one of these so bad ! Ill see if they will give me a discount so to show it off and drive. HAHAHA ! Jennifer already gave me a strict NO ! To bad they cant find a way to at least get it down to 100K. I understand the sweat, time and effort that went into this but feel the lower price would really move these. Though they don't have the capacity to move the numbers that would come in.

I am with you guys, bumpers look horrible. IMO chrome would look great but being it is a new car, laws may not allow it.

As Mike and I discussed yesterday in response to his questions to the designer, the laws require the bumper cover to be fitted with a crash support behind, and they are working on how to get a chrome bumper cover in place.

I missed that.

I did think that low production vehicles were exempt from certain regulations.

I can't confirm, but I believe even prototypes are subject to the same regulations that production cars have if they are to be registered on the road.

I would think this would be considered a modified car VIN'd as a Camaro.
It left the factory meeting all standards.

Unless there has been yet another change in the laws, production of fifty or less is supposed to be less restricted.
At this price I would expect fifty or less to be all they can sell per year.
As to looks, "Missed it by THAT much".
Of course there are NO new cars I truly lust after as they all seem plastic and fake somehow.

I believe they are shooting for 80-100. I didn't hear if this is a one year or more plan. Though stated was that there will be x20 built with the 1300hp 454. I would think there would be a larger number of the 800hp 396 and even more of the 450hp Base engine. I also didn't hear if they planned on hiring more or what the current handling of build numbers look like.

So even a bigger question of would this be another reason for keeping the stock bumpers in tacked behind the facia? What would be the liability if you tampered with DOT safety standards, even to modify a car that was produced by another manufacturer. Or if it got into an accident and didn't have the previously installed and authorized equipment.

My thought is, if it already has a Camaro title and VIN on it, it wouldn't need to be tested in any way to become a licensed vehicle. Some states might smog-test, but nobody is forcing crash tests on modifying existing vehicles.

I agree they probably designed it to fit existing crash bars for the sake of liability. Probably have some waiver agreement to sign also.
I wonder if they're buying Camaros and selling finished cars, or if you order your own Camaro and have it shipped to them for the conversion?

We were all picking stock 70 colors of what we thought it would be prior to the unveil. I don't mind the green (not my favorite). I said Shadow Gray as I thought it would have been a better color to show of the body lines and highlight the grill. If I was buying it, it would be ordered in Black Cherry.

Mike, thanks for the pictures and excellent coverage of the subject. I’m sure it will make some very happy. I doubt I will ever see one.

I like it! I love the color. I think they did an awesome job on it. I prefer a hardtop, but it'll do. (y)

I was surprised when I first saw it. I was fully expecting to not like it. Like what was mentioned early on, that it would be disproportioned. All Camaro with a front and rear clip. When finally uncovered, I was surprised and not afraid to say excited. I enjoy it for what it is and would like to own one. But as the rest of you, I'm not about to give up an original for it.
