The greatest of all time leads the PGA Championship by one stroke

I think Daly would be my choice of weekend golfing buddies. When he was swinging over 400 yards the gallery always got a special alert, the guy was unpredictable and virtually everyone but the TV audience was acutely aware.

I don't follow golf at all, but I like his attitude and not caring what others think and he just does it his way.

I have a John Daly story to tell.
It was 1991 and my boss said he couldn't make it to the PGA tournament at Crooked Stick CC in Indianapolis. Would I go and take a customer along ?
I jumped at it and when we showed up on saturday morning, a guy named John Daly was leading. No one had heard of him ? He was from Memphis and had played golf for Univ of Arkansas.
But when I saw him drive the ball; he was out-driving long hitters by 50 yards ! It was amazing to watch.
He had a red graphite shafted driver and he swung back so far his club-head was only a foot off the ground on his backswing. LOL
I bought a souvenir for $25 (it would cost $150 today). It was a 6 pack of Titleist golf balls in a nice case with a glossy pic of the 17th hole (par 3) at Crooked Stick.
I still hope to have a chance to get John to autograph it.

A great short video about John Daly's 1991 victory at the PGA in Indianapolis IN.
I was there watching him during the 3rd round on Saturday.

He was hitting drives 50 yards past the longest hitters at that time.

It was amazing to watch how far John could hit it. In 1993 he was the first and only player to ever reach this 632 yard Par 5 in 2 shots :
