Yeah, I've heard a bunch of horror stories which is why I decided to educate myself and I'm happy to educate others to the simplicity and the cost.

If you're in the south going solar is a no brainer as long as you have a clear enough area, but as far as up north, the cost can be substantially higher as you need many more panels as the sunlight hours are less and the elevation of the sun has much to regulate what can be generated.
 
In the winter on the shortest days up here I'd probably pushing it to get 6 hrs. of good light on a panel.
