Building Our Barndominium

I bought one from tractor supply last time (the one that just died) and everything had a lime green tint and was hard to see through when welding (I'm also colorblind and can't distinguish greens/browns or blues/purple).

I figure the resident welder here John (@Molly's 70) can make some recommendations.

Don't want to blow the bank on it, but I want to see what I'm welding.

I'll admit as I've gotten older it's harder to see, and I refuse to get glasses and only use off the shelf readers. As luck would have it my auto darkening mask shit the bed on the last weld, so I'm looking for a good one now.

Recommendations?
No auto darkening mask for me. I'm old school. Been doing it too long to change now. I've tried a few from coworkers but don't care for them. I use #9 for everything and # 10 for Aluminum.

I use Amber color for everything. Green sucks. You might like Blue. Pick a color & stick with it.

Before the auto darkening I had my old Lincoln helmet that I'd had for 20+ years and it served me well, but even going to lighter or darker lenses I still had a hard time. The newer helmet was better, but the shading screws with my eyes.

The fancy welding hoods I have tried you can dial in your shade preference. I don't like the big lens & I don't like gold or green. I tend to stick my face close to the weld so I don't need a big lense.
They say to start with 12 & work down. I like 9 & 10. I like amber for everything except I use a blue #10 for aluminum.

I always start high and work my way down, but I'm usually around a #10 (on the mask I have at least). My current mask has the grind function and I use it alot when I'm using the plasma cutter.

Plasma cutters are fun. That grind function may be good for you. I guess it will adjust brightness for cutting, eye safety if first.
There is NO cutting or grinding allowed in our shop. We have a separate room we have to grind our tungsten in.

My advice is to pick a helmet style & stick with it. It's important to be comfortable when you are welding.

Been looking for the hood I use at work & I don't see one. Thing still works great. No wonder they don't make them anymore.

This one looks good for the price.
I bought this one about a year ago. It's pretty nice, spendy but so are eyes.

That's the Lincoln I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy, exact same model.

Looks like a nice one. I'm interested in the headgear quality. Some of the ones I seen are total crap. M800HP
It's got 800 horsepower, so it's got to be good.

This brings back memories of welding water main pipe in 8-10' ditches working dbl shifts when I was 19 and late one night getting welding Flash burn in 1 eye, thinly sliced raw Potatoe over my eye seemed like the only thing that helped, BTW I wasn't a welder just all around do whatever labor guy

Ok, while at work today I checked out my hood. It's a Huntsman 511P. I think it is about 25ish years old maybe a little more. I have replaced the headset inside a couple/few times. 2x4 lens.
I brought this thread up with a couple coworkers today.

Apparently, the blue lens we use are hard to come by. The old timer I work with Albert, (we call him Fat Albert) calls them Cobalt lenses.
Says their radioactive just like the 2% thoriated tungsten we use. I knew about the tungsten. I seem to learn something new every day.
Glad I purchased the box of blue #10 lenses I have now. I've given a couple away, dropped two. I have a tiny chip on the corner of the one I'm using now.

I like welding in general but hate my company. I hope to bail out in a couple years.

Yesterday my ditch bitch (call her that because she can be downright nasty) had a fight with some stumps that were left over from some trees that were blocking the view of a beautiful maple that Lisa wanted to be able to see from the kitchen window and the lanai (back porch). The hole is about 6' deep and took about 1 hour to get them all out.

Safe to say, the ditch bitch held onto her title.

And the tree Lisa wanted to see..... I estimate the tree to be at least 150 years old.

Called the steel building sales guy yesterday to find out where my building is and he said he had to call and find out. Sends and email about 2 hours later stating "Because of the holidays and Hurricane Ian, things have gone slower, so it won't be manufatured and ready for installation until the end of January".

Not happy. Not happy at all. They told me 4 to 6 weeks from when the slab was poured and I signed the contract and put $10k down. It's been 6 weeks as of today. Now it's going to be another 6 weeks (12 weeks total). I'm pissed.

I'd be pissed too, and the fact he emailed you rather than give you the courtesy of a verbal explanation would set me off. Where's it being manufactured? I'd suggest calling the manufacturer direct, f the salesman. A guy with your persuasive skills should have it on a truck tomorrow.

I called the manufacturer today and got the same exact story (almost verbatim). She (the scheduling girl) said because of the hurricane they got a rash of orders to fix buildings and fell behind, so they are backed up producing.

I asked why can't they fit me in between and her response was my building is new and they need to fix other buildings first. I then quoted the contract (which I read the fine print yesterday) and said, okay, I understand, the contract states you have up to 12 weeks to install the building. If the building is late 1 day, I'll be subtracting $1k per day you are late. She said I can't do that to which I responded, I think you'd better check with your attorney, because my attorney said I had every right and he could win it in court. She didn't like that and hung up the phone.

Not sure where it stands now, but we'll see.
