Mind if I look at your gas cap?

My gas cap has never fit right. I assumed the PO used used whoever he had on hand but I think it’s not the right one. When you put the cap on, the inner lip of the gas cap hits that little metal tang (at 3:00 in the picture) preventing the cap from sitting right. When you twist it on, it goes on crooked.

Does your filler tube look like mine? Anyone know the trick to buying a gas cap that fits right? I read a thread on the OCS where a guy said he went through 10 caps and didn’t find one that fit right

Thanks 9E6D4686-9C2B-4EA9-9B75-D4C7A6C5B5BD.jpeg8AAC77B4-DAF3-48CE-8AAC-18E76CA52BE2.jpeg

Not sure if it’s the same but, mine is a 64.
The neck looks similar. Maybe if you can find one from 64? Or try a junk yard?

If I can’t find the “right” cap I might try cut that thing down.

Yeah,
I suspect that "tang" is there so only a certain-brand cap will fit.
It can't be there to help the cap seal , so I would cut it off flush.

My 68 Camaro doesn't have that tang.
67 Chevelle doesn't have a filler tube or gas tank yet :)

I don't think that it is a tang, looks like the lip is bent> I recall a conical spring that was sold during the first '70's gas "crisis" that you pushed down into the neck to keep people from siphoning out the gas. Maybe somebody removed one of those and bent the lip?

Wouldn't that tang prevent the cap from rotating and sealing ? That filler neck was probably replaced at some time.
I would cut the tang off or replace the filler neck.

Is there a difference between the vented and non-vented caps? I looked as SS396.com and they show both side of the caps. The interesting thing is that they sell a reproduction cap that will not work on
aftermarket tanks, but they also have original GM caps that work on both.

Do you have a long pry bar ? you can use that to bend the tang back the opposite way so it doesn't affect the way the gas cap goes on . That way no sparks to worry about and much safer to do.

My '64 Olds Starfire or my '68 Pontiac GTO clone doesn't have that tang. If I recall, my '67 Chevelle didn't have one either (pulled the tank and tossed it because it had holes and was leaking).

Good idea. Maybe a set of channel locks will reach down far enough to bend it out of the way.

Silly question, are turning the cap clockwise to seal it? And counter clockwise to loosen? If so, that tab shouldn't impede the cap rotation.

Not at home right now but I think it was clockwise to seal it. That little tab was hitting the rim of that inner piece riveted to the center of the cap. I took a screwdriver and bent it down slightly and now the gas cap seats fine.
