'68 Caprice Running Hot At Low Speeds

Safe to say the clutch ain't workin'. I have a rigid fan on the 394 olds with no shroud, 160 tstat, and she runs about 180 idling in the sun on blacktop. The 455 in the GTO clone runs at 185 and that has efans and a 160 tstat. Gonna switch over to rigid fan when I get back to working on it.

Yes, and they will pull a dollar bill hard against the condenser. I have neither noise from engagement, or suction.

The timing should be close to 25-30 degrees when idling. Does the engine slow down when you unplug the vacuum can ?

I heard once that clutches need to be stored standing up so the fluid does not leak out, IDK if it is true or not. With free returns I would keep trying, after all most of the crap is made in China or find a good OEM one.

I thought of that, verfied it with two other cars. Beth, the vac can is new, had a busted one a while back and could't understand why it ran like a dog.

The 65 Impala I had with a 327 had a solid fan like the Amazon you post, No ac but I beat the Snot out of that car and it never once ran hot, I don’t remember it having a shroud either, 1976/77 lol

Update
I installed the 17' Derale fixed blade steel fan with a 1" spacer to get it positioned correctly, and it moves a ton of air, even at idle. It used to sit at 1/3 on the gauge, now idles at 1/4. Tomorrow will be the test when I go to our local cruise in traffic with the a/c on and almost 100 degrees ambient temps!

I'm hoping so. I revved it up to 4K and it sure do make some noise! It almost sucked my Dita Von Teese pinup calendar off the wall! This car never sees the far side of 3K and that's on the highway at 75 mph, so mileage be damned!

If it's not for racing then it'll be perfect for cruising and it'll never overheat (unless the tstat sticks closed.
