In 1970 General Motors had an unbeatable line up in its A body line. Seeing those as new cars, the Olds 442 and Chevelle SS really stood out. They were visibly more aggressive than anything else. Cowl and scooped hoods, big aggressive stripes, styled wheels and big engines.
I know there’s lots of stories. A friend of mine talked his grandmother in to buying a brand new cranberry red LS5. We used to ride our bikes by his house. I remember when it showed up. That was the hottest new car in town. Of course he got to drive it when he came of age two years later and he ultimately owned the car. He put Thrush side pipes on it and some huge aluminum slotted mags on the rear only with huge wide tires. Of course it took air shocks to get the tires under the car. At that point I thought the car was going the wrong way. He got a girl pregnant in high school, dropped out and married her. He traded it in on a custom Dodge van in 1975. With 20-20 rear view vision, such a pity.
