2000 Excursion Auction Buy

Shop Foreman
So a guy bid and won this 2000 Excursion at a consignment auction. It has the Triton V-10 6.8L and 283,000 miles. (BTW, pics are after I cleaned it up... first go around)

Let's start with the bad.
Tires are awful, oldest is a 2002 and newest is a 2019. All different brands and all are junk.
Engine: no abnormal noises but is running rich and misfires, my bet is SOP boots and plugs. It did make it home the 5-6 miles.
Interior: man it was filthy, got most of the trash out of it but I need to clean the carpets. Needs front seat covers.
Exterior: Has a dent on pass rear door near the handle and it won't open Looks like a tree touched the roof above the R/R door. Mirrors don't match.
Misc: Rear hatch struts are weak, missing a piece of trim around the back window, left barn door cable needs repair, Some other things but it is 25 years old.

This seller purchased it in 2001 at 28,000 miles at a local dealer and has been registered in Central NC its whole life.

The Good:
4WD: IDK if it works
Has not been modified
After installing a used battery I had it started and ran from the auction, brakes worked and transmission shifted.
Got it for a good price.

Plans? IDK, get it safe, cleaned up and running decent and sell it but for now it is a project.

As the saying goes, "I wouldn't touch that with YOUR ten foot pole!"
Buddy bought similar, but V8, ex-FBI car.
It's cost him more to repair than it was to buy.

Might be easier to pull the seats and yank the carpet to clean it outside the vehicle. Otherwise, a few parts and a few fixes, all new sneakers, a heavy buff and sell it for a profit.

We don't see them at the dealership any more due to age, but the V10 is a hoss. They'll eat coils but that is about it. Back when I was married, my wife thought that "we" wanted a class C motorhome, and all the old hands at work told me V10 hands down over a diesel one.

The V-10 hung around until the 7.3L Godzilla gas engine took its place so it had a good long production run.

Any dents in the hood from flying spark plugs.
Yes, they did have that issue but there are ways to overcome it, one way is to torque the plug a little more than spec.

I was a NC Inspector years ago. When I know it will pass I will contact my buddy who is an inspector and he will enter it into the system then I can put insurance on it and get a plate.

Just went to DMV, title now in my name.

For inspections... in NC if a car is 35 or older, no inspections. 20 years or older no emission inspections in emission counties, just safety inspections.

God help you if you bring a 35 year old car or older car into the State, it has to go though a DMV official looking at the car, all serial numbers etc including hidden vins prior to being allowed to get a title for it. In NC do not spend any money on a 35+ yo car until the DMV inspector approves it. One stolen part and the car is gone. This even applies if you move into the state with the car. IF it has a NC title, none of the above applies. Their reasoning is a fraudulent inspector was titling kit cars and rat rods with new engines as antique. Technically by law IF you put a later model engine in a car it may be required to pass an emission test or at least meet the requirement for devices. Again, if you have a NC title, they don't care.

In Florida if you have a title, at the DMV they put it in your name (even if from out of state), pay taxes and fees and walk out with a plate in under 15 minutes. No inspections, no nothin'.

The license plate offices are privately owned and are agents of the State. Several have been closed down for not following the rules.

I replaced all 10 spark plugs and coil packs, she runs much better actually I am super suprised how smooth it is.

I followed Fordtechmakuloco on You Tube, he is a tech and shows you how to do it. He said the key is to over torque the plugs to 20-25 ft lbs. Getting to number 5 on the passenger side is tough but doable.
I replaced the rear hatch shocks so now the glass stays up. I cleaned the back of the truck now that I can get in there.

Next up is an oil change and repair the horns.

The Ram truck I bought new in 09 needed new spark plugs and everyone wanted roughly $250 to replace 6 plugs so I decided to do the job myself, 1 side of 3 was like a Hemi engine with plugs down the hole other side was like a reg engine, engineers?? that designed this need their asses kicked good and hard and I understood why everyone wanted so much labor $

Working on the V-10 is easier than working on the Diesel. I had the drivers side bank done in no time, passenger side took a lot longer.

Working on cleaning it now, I need to take the center seats out because I need to clean under them and I need to get the door panel off the R/R door so I can release the latch and get it to open and then repair the issue.
