Discount Tire, Tire Replacement Recommendations

I took my 2013 Fusion to Discount Tire yesterday for a balance and rotate, I was getting a vibration at 70. The very polite service writer measured the tread and said that it is at 5/32 and I need to think about tires soon. I questioned him stating that I bought Michelin Defenders for that car to last a long time and they have not been on their that long. He said they have an 80K warranty and the tires have 40K on them. Then he said manufactures will only prorate at 2/32. I said you said I need tires at 4/32 so no pro rate? He said that is what Discount Tires recommends.

Beware, I have had great service with Discount Tire and they have to scroll thru my pages of tire purchases to find a car but they are in the business of selling tires, that is why they offer free rotations and balances.

I went to one a few years ago here in town and would never go back. I was desperate and needed work done on a weekend. My local place out here in the rural town I'm by is closed on the weekends, so I had no choice. My local owned place stays extremely busy.

Maybe send an email to Michelin about the wear and conversation with the Discount employee? I recently put Defenders on my pick up and @ $1,200 hope to at least get 70K out of them, they ride great

The last 2 sets I bought were from the independent I deal with. The only problem I have is his balancer is slightly off and I get a high speed vibration.

I will say that my parents old Mercedes had good 12 year old tires on it. They were starting off on an 800 mile trip and I made them stop at the Discount Tire I go to to get a new set of Continentals. Their car has a hard size to find but they had them in stock. In 45 minutes they were off and on their way.

I worked at Discount Tire for a few years in the late 80s. I have not and will never spend the money for Michelins based on my experience with them. I saw more belt separations from them than all the other tires we carried put together.

I have had good luck with Michelins, Goodyear car tires have always separated belts and failed prematurely IMO. The Goodyear Endurance trailer tires seem to be performing well. Maxxis is my other trailer tire choice.

On the cars I do not want to spend mega bucks on tires I tend to lean towards Kumho. I am running 14" 205/75/R14s on my Midnight Bronze Chevelle and since it has wheel covers I like white stripes, talk about a hard to find tire, Kumho carries them.

I've never had problems with Michelin tires.

I have had issues with BFG tread separating. Happened twice and the tires were only 3 years old with loads of tread left.

Wife was driving my F250 Crew longbed when the RR tread let go and damaged the rear skin when it caught the brace and pulled the rear in and crumpled it like tin foil.

My only experience with Discount Tire was not a good one.
I have since bought my own tire machine and balancer, and get all my tires mail-order.
Unfortunately, Discount Tire recently bought out Tire Rack.

I have been getting prorate warranty on my tires at Discount for many years now. I am on my third set of the Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires and will be getting prorate warranty on those (they are currently at 4/32"). Maybe it is only Michelin that does the 2/32" thing, but by the time they get to that measurement, the tires are considered to be worn out (where no warranty would apply). I would ask to speak to a manager about it - the counter guy may not understand how it works (I believe that if they are between 4/32" & 2/32". then you get the prorate warranty). Unfortunately for me, the Cinturato P7 is on backorder, so I will be going with a set of Continentals this time.

I just looked up the Michelin warranty and I think the counter guy is wrong. It says that if there is a defect and the tire is within 2/32" of full tread, they will replace it. After that, if it wears out before the rated mileage, then they will give you prorate warranty. I would show them that in print (the page right after the table of contents is where that info starts - right hand side of the page).
