69 Malibu Pro Touring build

This little project escalated quickly.

Thanks to Justin Nall at Vector Force Industries for hooking me up with these Viking Crusader triple-adjustable coilovers and some 850# springs.

I got a little carried away with making room to be sure nothing would bind, which opened up the possibility to move the coilover mount further outboard on the A-arm, which will make for a significant improvement in the motion ratio.

I still have the other side to do, but should go pretty quick compared to figuring out the first one.

On my 68 Camaro, I did the "Guldstrand Mod" , which was figured out by Dick Guldstrand competing in the Trans Am racing with the Z28 in 1967-69.
He moved the front upper control arm mount back and down a little. It improved the caster of the suspension.
That's about all I know. LOL
I redrilled the mounting holes of the upper control arms. I bought tubular control arms so I wouldn't have to cut the top of the frame that would interfere.
 
Just finally read this whole thread today lol. Love it, great to hear all the stories about family and of course the car. It is amazing to see you still have the car after so many years. I miss my first 5.0 mustang, of course wish I kept it!

I got the car back together last night, and today I ran it at Minnesota Autosports Club autocross at the MN State Fairgrounds.

With a little bit of tuning and re-learning what to do with new parts (new front coilovers, different front spring rate, and different front brake pad compound) I got it figured out well enough to finish 11th (of 109) raw time, 12th in PAX, and 1st in CAMT on 100+ run Yokohamas.

 
Similar course run backwards on Sunday with a few changes.

I'm not going to lie... I love the attention and ego-strokes I get from doing this in a big old Chevelle... when SCCA National Champions take notice, give compliments on both the car and driving, and tell me they can't believe this car can do it, it's hard to fit the helmet on for the next run. :)

Bet you'd blow the springs and suspension out of the car with 2k lbs of water, not to mention you'd be sloshing shit everywhere, but I'd pay real money to watch it.

I would like to take my 67 around the track when I've got it going.
It has the "normal" handling hop-ups like 1" lowering springs, monotube KYB shocks, Sportcomp TA 17" tires, 4 wheel discs and big swaybars (1.25" front and 1" rear).
The 489 BBC has aluminum heads so it's not too heavy in the front.
It will be interesting to see how far behind Derek's car it would be.

It could be a race! Do the lowering springs help that much?

Mostly dialed in, I have a couple things to work on yet... always improving, always making changes.
I joked with a guy yesterday, he commented that I've been driving the same car for over 20 years. I told him no, it's a different car every week. I have to tune, adjust, or adapt to something that's different on it every time I race. :)

With the different front brake pad compound, I now can't get enough rear bias to rotate the car with the brake as much as I'd like.
When I trailer to events, I like to run 1/4" of toe-out but I set that back to 0 for street driving and any events I drive to.

I'm planning to try a high-ackermann setup (flipped steering arms, custom outer tie rod ends) and dial in bumpsteer to toe out just a bit in compression to see if the turn-in will improve, and with that maybe solve the lack of corner-entry rotation as well.

Also new tires due this week. :)

I think they are 100-150 lbs/in stiffer than stock so they do help. Made by BMR.
But not adjustable like that cool suspension Derek has. :)

My spring rates are about double that.

Stock is something like 325# F / 150# R
I'm currently running 850# F / 450# R with improved motion ratio in front making it behave more like a 925-950# spring.
