Auction Visit And Thoughts On The Classic Car Market

I have two retired friends whose hobby is attending the BJ and Mecum auctions all over the country. They occasionally purchase cars, but mostly do it as a hobby. Mecum is here in Houston this weekend, and one of them was working the sale as a driver, so I used his bidders pass to attend.

First off, what a show! Its like a circus or Disney designed to appeal to guys like us, right down to people getting drunk at 10 am. But for a guy with no money to spend, its a reminder of how many people in the world are so much better off that you are. Kind of like going to a whorehouse with your buddies and sitting in the bar listening to the piano player while they are upstairs with the girls...

Anyway, after today, I'd say there is a softening in the classic car market. A lot of cars bid far short of what I felt they should have, and a lot didn't meet reserve. A frame off, Gobi Beige, black interior and top '70 SS396 coupe, a/c, 4 speed, buckets, air, windows, locks, tilt, U14, am/fm 8 track, cruise, cowl induction, no excuses car stalled at $53K, should have been close to $100k in my estimation. There were a ton of 2000-2006 era high end Mercedes that sold in the $6-8K range, apparently there are no longer parts for these and people are dumping them. The only cars that topped $100K as of 3 pm were a '65 Mercedes 230SL convertible concours a/c car right at $100K, and a '70 Mach 1 428 4 speed car that still smelled like fresh paint and tires. Even mint early Broncos that were nudging 6 figures last year did not top $40K today.

There were some cars that sold Thursday that looked like great deals though. The big stuff goes thru Saturday afternoon and evening, like the '69 RS/SS 396/375 hp L-89 Camaro convertible loaded with options and docs and a fresh world class resto that is projected to top $250K.

I did see some customs that sold for a quarter of what they cost to build, but my friend said that is always the case. Regulars like him and his friend Tim know other regulars like "the wiper", the guy who follows each of his cars across the block wiping the sides down, "cro magnon", the big guy with the undersling sling blade jaw, "fancy shoes" in patent leather loafers with gold buckles, and "chicken Charlie" one of the Mecum floor workers whose antics are legendary. Apparently, these characters go to all the big auctions, they gotta be richer than shit, a gold bidders pass is $500 per event.

Oh, and a lot of guys who look like most of us were there with their "nieces"!

I wonder how it would have effected the value if it had a TKX 5 speed instead of a Muncie and a 502 with "396 decals" instead of the stock 396 ?
I see cars like I described going for much higher than the stockers. Or am I wrong ?
I'm talking about the "common" SS396 types, not a rare LS6 or L89 Camaro.

I observed, and was old by my oft attending friend, that a pure stock resto will outsell a modded car, unless the modded car is some kind of a $300K build, Ridler winner type of vehicle. So in his estimation, the above listed mods would not have added value to that car, and would have actually held it back. Two '67 Camaros rolled across the block back to back and the modded one fell short of what the restoration brought. I don't know much about Camaros, Chevelles and El Caminos are my thing. I did "educate" some lookers yesterday though, there was a very nice LS-6 with power windows, but the switches were in the wrong place on the door panel, so I called it as an add on, and I explained how cowl induction worked, the looker thought it was broken because the flapper was open when the car was shut off.

I suspect that the modded car is what most of us would want to own, and the resto is being bought for investment purposes. Most who like a modded car will build one of theie own, as opposed to writing a check for it. The person buying th resto may drive it a bit and show it, but that's not the main reason they got it.

A nice street rod may cost $150-200K to build, but wil sell used for a third of that because each street rod is someone's personal vision, and finding someone who loves it enough to pay top dollar is impossible. I saw multiple rods prove that yesterday.

The cars I'm talking about "appear original" but have modern upgrades to the brakes, suspension, steering and drivetrain.
I've seen them outsell the stockers by a wide margin.
It's a no-no to "customize" the appearance of a desirable musclecar IMHO.

I’ve been to Kissimmee Mecum about 6-7 yrs ago just as a Broke spectator but we had fun 🙂 in the early 80’s I had a 70 Mach 1 351C 4 spd and also had a 68 F100 SWB that I thought I put a JY 390 in and it turned out to be a 428 CJ out of a wrecked 68 Galaxie vert with 390 fender emblems, wonder what a Non numbers matching 70 Mach 1 428 4 spd would bring? I thought about switching engines when I found out it was a 428 CJ but never did it, DD’s and both ran great so left them be, sold mine for $400 to pay bills 😒

I prefer restored cars myself, but like the add ons that Beth mentions that keep a stock look. Pertronix, overdrives, extra insulation, hidden stereos, anyting to make the drive more enjoyable. But I drive my stuff.

Well, I'm one of those poor guys, and I'm good with it. I would like to attend one of those auctions someday.
Yep me too. I’d rather hobnob with the Honda crowd at the local autocross and watch some fat guy in a 90 HP Civic kick everyone’s ass on course.

Overdrive transmission is the single best modification anyone can do to any old car.

I did the 2004r conversion almost 20 years ago. Not only was it easy (bolted right up, all I had to do was move the crossmember back, and the holes were already in the frame), but I also got 25 mpg on the highway with the tall rear end it had at the time.

I did that once. I put a 700R4 behind a 350. The driveshaft had to be cut, shops screwed it up. Then the rear end gearing was wrong. I finally got tired of messing with it and sent the car on its way.

I have no issues driving my SBC 350s with THM 350s.

I think all used vehicles are softening. Read a report this morning that used car prices in general dropped 11% this past QTR. In my opinion, I think classic prices will be continuing to come down. As we all have discussed here, the do-it-yourself knowledge is leaving the masses. The time we spent on these are not what the new generations want to due with their time. They don't want to spend the money on maintenance and upkeep. The parts are Chinesium crap. etc... .

I do think that the used car market as a whole will continue to rise though. Over the next 7-12 yrs, the GOVT EV mandates 'MAY' continue to grow if these unrealistic EPA/GOVT requirements continue to move forward. I think as we travel down that road, people will still realize that they still need ICE vics.

UNLESS, the self-induced gas shortage continues. Then we all WILL be forced out of the ICE vics by high gas prices and higher registration fees. Then the ICE market will fall out.

Neither one of my kids is interested In old cars for the sake of it. My youngest is into racing but more for karts than anything.

The kid can shred, though. He’s all into 80s and 90s metal (the real stuff like Metallica, not the fake hair band metal) and I yeaterday he was working on an SRV tune. Works for me.

Our 5yr old Grandson is all about Karts and I think we are going in on it this next year.

He's super in to cars. Though our kids are not. They like to ride in them and want them when I'm dead but that's about it.

Neither of my kids are interested in Dad's old cars and tractors. I have willed one car to each kid, after I am gone and they get rid of them I won't care. Until then I will be the caretaker for them.,
