That helps me also, never heard the dry fan adjustment explained this simply. For me, I've always just dialed it back from full fan about 10% or so. This is much more scientific and clear.
 
I always adjusted it by feel and shooting a fan on test paper on the wall, so I'd never known about this method either. I learned something new as well.
 
I do the test paper also, and a spray out card, but neither will give you any indication of a full wet pattern. Paper soaks it up, and the card is too small.
