Why are the Jard 45+5uf dual run capacitors pieces of crap?!?!?

The AC in the house was blowing warm. So, I shut it off, then checked the dual run capacitor. Blown again. This particular model only lasts 18 to 24 months, so I keep
a couple of new ones on hand in the shed. I would install one that is larger diameter (and supposedly much more reliable), but I would have to modify the mounting area
to do that. So freaking annoying. Gripe over.

I wonder if any of those "soft-start" devices would help protect the capacitor ?
This one is expensive. Maybe there is one more reasonable ?

I installed one of those units (from microair) at my last house., but for different reasons.

With my solar setup the surge from the inrush amps was tremendous, so splitting the fan and compressor helped considerably.

Try AmRad capacitors made in Ft Lauderdale Fl., they also have a 5 year warranty, I also added a new hard start with potential relay kit to the new ac system I installed in 2020 in our home, no problems yet, you can use metal plumber strap if you want to put a larger diameter cap in there

Mine sits in a metal plate with a round hole in it. No way to strap it in (the plate is on an angle, so I don't know where I would mount it with straps). I would probably have to get a new piece of metal, then punch a bigger hole in it than the other one has. The AmRads are pricey - I will think about it. The AC systems here in Arizona get worked harder than anywhere else - especially with a ground mount package unit sitting on a concrete slab.

On my Carrier 2.5 ton heat pump, would you install a hard start kit or a soft start like Kevin's microair ? I read you can't use both.

I’m pretty sure you can get an AmRad that’ll fit into that hole

Hard start with Potential relay, that’s what’s on my Comfortmaker (made by a sub division of Carrier) 2.5 ton het pump

I sold my last 45/5 AmRad earlier today, 35/5 is 2” round, 40/5 is 2 1/8” rnd, do you have a Johnstone supply near you? If so give them a call and ask, mine are CPT caps that have a center post common and cpt post for 1 side of a hard start, better than the normal AmRads but cost a little moreE0308EE3-BCFE-4DC5-8FF2-02472F2D124A.jpeg

From what I'm reading, a soft start would be better with my solar setup.
Is it ok to install a bigger capacitor like the 45/5 ? Or do you think that's a waste when installing a microair soft start ?
The soft starter really is easy to install

They actually moved to a location that is closer to me, so that is a plus. I may call them.
I'm not sure if they'll give you a discount telling them it's for a job I have something to do with? I have a cash account with the Clearwater Fl. branch and in the Jstone computer, I could probably put it on Will Call at that store

You would probably have to ask your local branch if the account can used nationwide.
I’ll call tomorrow morning and post what they say, I buy all my Mitsubishi mini splits from them and they usually are very helpful on anything I ask for

That’s an OK Cap but not what I use, AmRad is my #1 go to then Titan USA made then US Trade Pro (Green), Trade Pro makes a cheapo too

Somewhere I have a Cap dated Nov 1969 that I replaced 4ish yrs ago, they don’t make’m like that anymore

They don't make anything that good anymore. Planned obsolesce.
I learned my lesson on cheap Caps when I used a Factory China replacement and around 8 or so months later it Failed and the guy was Pissed, I went back and put a USA made cap in for No Charge then he was OK but I never heard from him again and possible talked shit about me?
