Hey guys, I have an old Holley 800cfm spread bore double pumper that needs a refinishing. Any suggestions on who does a good job, and approximate pricing? Thanks in advance!

Either my eyes are deceiving me, or that thing is huge. I'm curious as to refinishing myself as I'd never heard of anyone doing that.

Ask for Steve

Out of Washington.

They will take it apart, fix anything that looks to have an issue, then run it on their test engine. This is to ensure it works.

He says they do this because to many old carbs have been junk and to far gone. This is to ensure you the owner are not throwing money away.

Then they will pull it off, tear it down, send it to their plater. Once it comes back, they will completely rebuild it, and then run it on the test engine to ensure its working properly.

$285 for the rebuild and $350 for the plating. ( I just called to check his pricing). 4-6 weeks right now for turnaround.

I bought my 780cfm date coded Holley, completely refurbished original parts, from Tom (email: zmonster53@aol.com) for my L78 engine build. It wasn't cheap (around $1,750). He's a nice guy on Long Island, NY. He sells on ebay. He owned a speed shop back in the day, so he's old school. If you can't find anyone to do what you need, I'd ask Tom, and you can tell him that I sent ya. I think I have his full name and phone number in my file if you need that. Here's a pic of mine.

Good luck,

John

I powder many of my car parts in my industrial oven in the shop. If they are to big, I take them to a friend Powder shop in town. I would recommend Cerakote if you are going to do a carb. Reason is that Powder creates a higher build or thickness than Cerakote. I would think you'd want a thinner coating on a carb.

Here's another question... Do you think it would be okay if I just rebuilt it myself and did nothing with the finish? I guess I wasn't expecting such a high price tag...

Having spent way too much money acquiring a numbers carb and having it remanufactured, it’s simply an ego pursuit. It sure is pretty and works well. On future cars I’m going to Holley fuel injections. I know it’s off topic but it’s a way of telling Mr. Leadhead that it’s ok to deviate.

I t is a tough call on the price. and probably a personal choice on what you really want. Especially when you can get and AED around $800. I think I paid $640 for my AED 750 HPHO.
Had I wanted try and stay original looks, Id pay the price to customize your 800CFM. But I would spend the more money for adjustable bleeds as well.

All my carbs run amazing. But I like to squeeze every once of performance out of them. I will never go FI.

I got the carb for free 20 years ago from my brother. I think I'll just rebuild it and see how it works on the 396. Thanks for all the input guys!

If I were you and money is a concern, clean and rebuild it yourself for now, and down the road if you still feel you want to, have it done then if you have the money.

While I try and keep things clean, it's going to get dirty no matter what, so my goal is to get it clean and working ands if it bothers me that much then I do something about it, otherwise I drive it and enjoy.

Keep us posted and hopefully a build thread. I for one would like to follow on. When you posted this last night, I actually started looking for one. I would like try and see how 'modern' I can get it.

I'd probably do the same thing, if I already had a carb. I had nothing! LOL! So the cost was heart-stopping for me. I wanted a genuine 780 like what my old L78 car had though. When I restored one of my BMW 2002tii's I really went deep into cleaning and painting various parts. Plating is really the best way to go, but I had fairly good success with Eastwood Products spray paint to match the plated look.

I appreciate all the advice guys. Don't know when I'm gonna get to it exactly. I'm still in the process of weeding through the sheetmetal issues, but I want to work on the engine too. So much to do!!!

That's the part I enjoy most. I love putting it back together and lining everything up.

When you get the body lines perfect, it can be just as sexy as a woman.
