Francis Scott Key Bridge, I-695 Baltimore

Chevelle_Nut

Shop Foreman
I remember when the Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in 1977, it was designed to relieve truck traffic on I-695 West.

Today a Singapore flagged ship took the bridge down, lives are lost and it is a huge US economic hit.

I've been reading that Singapore seems to have a closer relationship ship with China than the US. I sure hope it wasn't deliberate, but that ship seemed to be headed straight for the support.

"May Day, we have lost power!"
A ship without power is just a great big log, it's going where the current pushes it.
So THIS incident was not terrorism, but it demonstrates how fragile bridges are and the next one WILL be deliberate.
The same sort of irrational vermin who carried out 911 will be inspired by this.
We may have to re-engineer a lot of bridges.
The GG in Frisco and the NYC bridges are probably the most likely targets for symbolic value.

Do we have a betting pool on how long it will take to replace this bridge?
My first thought is about three years.
The first year to deal with all the investigations and finger pointing.
The second year to deal with all the eco-nut and other crazies lawsuits intended to stop reconstruction.
A third year to do the "Emergency" funded lots of overtime and careless book keeping Union only contracted actual construction.
The next couple of years afrter may reveal lots of tabloid fodder as kick-backs and pay-offs come to light but at least the bridge will be back up.

"Why didn't the ship drop anchor when it was drifting? The Patapsco is not super wide."
New Captain Ding Bang Ow transferred to ships after his SFO crash?
First mate Sum Ting Wong was unavailable for comment.

Am I the only one to see the obvious?
Throw a Normandy Beach Invasion type effort into putting up new facilities at Fort Armistead Park and some other points south.
At least it is not the dead of winter, so clearing the wreckage should begin immediately to allow access to the Western docks.
Ferry boats specifically for the Haz-Mat trucks may help.
They are saying five years, betting Trump could get it done in three, maybe less.
The entire bridge and access roads do not have to be rebuilt, just some supports and the steel structure.
For the park lovers (All ten of them?) suck it up, and maybe once the bridge is restored the park can be restored too.

As for the cost, not one cent of taxpayer funds. Take it out of China's trade balance.
Let them collect from the shipping companies insurance, if they can.

EDIT: I just looked the park up.
Clearly no one loves it, seems pretty abandoned, covered in graffiti, overgrown, and maybe still FEDERAL land?

EDIT 2: American pilot DID drop anchor but it did not work.
