MAY be coming into a bit more money than I usually have. Best DD engine for the 68 EC?

I still intend to finish my over the top 327, but if I want the 68 to be practical when not entering events I need a "Stock" engine for DD duty.
I would like to have roller hydraulic lifters and it needs to be a simple swap with my Gen. 1.
Has to take a flywheel as I will not be swapping trans, just engines.
TB FI is possible but not a priority as it ads complexity and $$.
I want to be able to swap engines in hours, so just engine and headers.
Mileage will be more important than HP so long as it has enough to climb over the Sierra mountains without struggling.
What should I be looking for, and hopefully available already built at sane cost.

What's in your inventory? if I had to do this I'd be looking for a SBC 350 out of whatever as cheap as possible long as it don't smoke
Agree. And if you can find some small chamber 305 HO heads from the late 80's, they should boost compression and low end torque.
That combo should make a torquey 300 hp.

IIWM, I'd keep it simple. You can have multiple engines for one body to satisfy different needs but is it cost effective? Lots to consider, even the time and hassle of chasing your tail instead of racing towards the target.
I have multiple bodys to achieve the same desires, and since they're all classics, a one time license fee and an added car to my collector insurance is somewhat cheep. The biggest downfall is space.

Body repair and frame mods are the big obstacles of the moment.
Once they are done the issue with my current engine is that it is a bit too radical to use as a daily driver.
Good gas is now $8.00 a gallon.
I've been reducing the fleet but the EC has to remain.
Do not want to spend months building another engine, want to have confidence in what I drive.
So looking for what I can snag from a builder or Summit Racing.
DO NOT need an expensive "Race" engine, I already have that.
350 for the torque, roller cam for the reliability with our current lousy oils.
Aluminum heads would be nice but not mandatory.
I'm not up to speed on the modern designations, L??

Back in '98 or so I bought a crate 350 with iron Sportsman heads and a f.t. 230 duration cam for $2400. In front of a T56 tranny and 3.55 gears it got just under 20 mpg in a '69 chevelle. I was perfectly fine with that and a bit smaller cam would have upped that a few. It was truly a multi platform success but not stellar on any front. I'd bet that same motor would be double the money and that tranny would be 3k. The TKX 5 speed is a better choice with a slightly taller gear. I'd think 25 mpg would be attainable, but you'd likely kill the fun factor.
My choice would be a 350, 170cc heads, 224 duration ft cam and 9.0 compression built right using good oil and you'll be fine. A few things to secure cam success is using an older core and having it ground to your specs, refaced lifters and lifter bores in good shape all should keep you on the road. Much cheaper than a roller, quieter, and just easier.

Trans is a wide ratio Muncie with a GV Overdrive fitted.
Fairly rare combo but I had to do something about the low rear gears.
Now I'm anxious to find out if the deal is happening or not.

If you can find a late model replacement short block for a 89-95 truck SBC it'll come set up for roller lifters and might even
have a small cam in it. (used to be that a short block came with cam and timing chain ) Or a used engine from those model trucks might be an Ok start.
The good thing about a used engine from a fuel injected truck is that there usually isn't too much bore wear on an EFI engine over the same type engine that is carb equipped.

This is what I'd do if you can find an engine like this (y)
Swap on a standard performer intake and qj
Here is a 1998 350 that is rebuilt, vortec heads and roller cam, $2800 + shipping

Can you come up with $1000 ?
Here's a guy in Vegas who has a late 90's? 350 with a 350 turbo for $1200.
You don't need the trans so maybe you can make a deal.

Hmm, wonder what I could get for my WC Ex-Camaro V8 T5?
Kind of hard to find now and this one is low mileage.
Sold the project I bought it for so I could live without it.

May have found a stock G-Body, possible SS, not that SS means much for the later cars.
$1,600 and mostly strait.
Title issues of course.

I have a verbal agreement on a "Decent for the price" G-Body El Camino, $1,100.
It drove into it's current spot, but the Uncle lost the title, which of course was not in his name.
305/TH350, NO RUST!
But it will need a RF fender and new tail lenses at the least.
Pretty good deal if I can find the $ quickly enough.
I see lot of incomplete junk for more.
Intent is to NOT try to cherry this one out, just fix and drive.
Might try to put an OD trans of some sort into it for mileage if it can be done simply and inexpensively.
