Just wanted to see how picky people are about their motor oil. From perusing other non Chevelle sites, I know that people can be very passionate about their oil and filters.
Do you have motor oil brand loyalty?
Do you have oil filter brand loyalty? Why?
Do you ever mix weights? I have several cars that I maintain and almost always use the manufacturer recommended weight but in a pinch would you top off a 5w20 car with 5w30? What about 0w20?
What do you use in your old SBC or BBC? My modern cars use 5w20 and such but I still use good old 10w40 in the old cars just because that’s what my dad did.
Do you change at 3k, 5k miles or based on oil life monitor?
If you have a hobby car that gets very few miles, how long do you go between oil changes ?
These are just musings. If anyone else has questions or random thoughts feel free to jump in.
I used to use Fram filters just because that’s what my Dad used when I was a kid but I now know that they are considered poor. I try to use Mobile 1 now but will use STP or other random brands if there is a package deal at the parts store.
For oil I just use whatever full synthetic is on sale. I’ll pay a few bucks extra for name brand but if there is a great deal on O’Reillys I’ll use that.
Until about 10 years ago I changed oil at 3k miles but finally realized I was one of the few still doing that so now I use the oil monitor on the car but end up changing a little before the car says it’s time. Usually around 8k.
I just changed the oil in my wife’s 99 Mustang Cobra. I knew it didn’t have many miles but didn’t realize it had been 3 years since the last oil change. Only has about 1k miles and change on the oil.
