Motor oil and related discussion

Just wanted to see how picky people are about their motor oil. From perusing other non Chevelle sites, I know that people can be very passionate about their oil and filters.

Do you have motor oil brand loyalty?
Do you have oil filter brand loyalty? Why?

Do you ever mix weights? I have several cars that I maintain and almost always use the manufacturer recommended weight but in a pinch would you top off a 5w20 car with 5w30? What about 0w20?

What do you use in your old SBC or BBC? My modern cars use 5w20 and such but I still use good old 10w40 in the old cars just because that’s what my dad did.

Do you change at 3k, 5k miles or based on oil life monitor?

If you have a hobby car that gets very few miles, how long do you go between oil changes ?

These are just musings. If anyone else has questions or random thoughts feel free to jump in.

I used to use Fram filters just because that’s what my Dad used when I was a kid but I now know that they are considered poor. I try to use Mobile 1 now but will use STP or other random brands if there is a package deal at the parts store.

For oil I just use whatever full synthetic is on sale. I’ll pay a few bucks extra for name brand but if there is a great deal on O’Reillys I’ll use that.

Until about 10 years ago I changed oil at 3k miles but finally realized I was one of the few still doing that so now I use the oil monitor on the car but end up changing a little before the car says it’s time. Usually around 8k.

I just changed the oil in my wife’s 99 Mustang Cobra. I knew it didn’t have many miles but didn’t realize it had been 3 years since the last oil change. Only has about 1k miles and change on the oil.

I use Amsoil in almost everything (small to big engines), but in my classics with original engines (not rebuilt or new), I use regular motor oil.

For oil filters I use K&N Premium high flow filters for most everything, and for my classics, I use Wix.

In my daily drivers I change the oil at 10k miles (Amsoil Signature Series is good for 25k miles), and in my classics I change the oil at 3k miles. Small engines at usually 50 hours.

Yes every vehicle I own get their own specific oil, filter and schedule. 70 Chevelle (SB 400), 68 Camaro (SB 355) and my sons 12 Silverado (5.3) all get 0w-40 Mobile 1 full synth Euro blend. All vehicles get FRAM XG5 filters (No bypass, full synth material). Sons truck gets changed every 3k. Chevelle gets every 1K. Camaro gets changed every yr. since it's in finish mode. Suburban gets 0w-20 Mobile 1 Truck and SUV and FRAM XG as well and changed on 6K

Bobs The Oil Guy Im a huge reader of BTOG

Lots of good info. To much but filter through and you find what's good for you.

Brand loyalty: Not really loyalty, but creature of habit... I mostly use Mobil 1 full synthetic in the newer stuff, cheap conventional in the Model T, and Valvoline VR-1 in the Chevelle
Filter loyalty: Wix, every time. Haven't let me down, so no reason to change.

Mixing weights: I put half 10W-30 and half 20W-50 in the Chevelle, both Valvolite VR-1. I figure that makes it a 15W-40. Maybe I'm wrong, but it hasn't blown up yet.

I use Schaffers and Amsoil for my modern DD. VR1 or BradPenn for classics with FT cams. DD gets 5k filter changes and 10k oil changes. Classics get changed out changed out either annually if they get used, and if they just sit, I just keep pushing it out till they do get used. I use Wix also, but when the inventory goes away I'll replace them with baldwin filters.

I use Mobil 1 0w-40 in the old cars (67 Chevelle and 68 Camaro) and 0w-20 in the Rav4.
Synthetic oil doesn't lose it's lubricity, but it does get dirty. I change the filters on the older cars every 3 to 5000 miles and change the oil at 15,000.
The Rav4 has amazing engineering. It can go 15000 miles and the oil doesn't even look dirty.

Excursion: Delo 5w-40 Motorcraft oil filter -- Every 5,000 miles
Fusions: Motorcraft 5w-20 Synthetic Blend Motorcraft oil filter -- Every 5,000 Miles
Chevelles: Rotella T-4 20W-50 (Diesel oil) A/C Delco Filters Once every 2-3 years
Mercedes: Mobil 1 0W-50 Mann oil Filter -- When I feel like it
Vibe: Whatever brand 5W-30 usually A/C Delco filter, almost 300,000 miles so something is right. Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles
Durango: Same whatever 10W-30 and WIX filter Every 3,000 miles

My Chevelle get the AC Delco PF1218 oil filter. I have been running Peak engine oil for years, as Big Lots used to put it on sale all the time BOGO - I had a lot stocked ahead. I did purchase
some other brands of oil when NAPA was closing them out. I was using the AC Delco PF52 oil filter on my mom's Astro van, but they no longer make the full length version. So, I recently found a case of 6 Casite CF52 filters. The filters get good reviews, so hopefully they will do the job. It also gets the Peak engine oil.

When I had V8's with flat tappet cams VR1 in 10w30 & Napa Gold or Premium (Wix) filters at 3K miles or when it looked dirty, roller BBC VR1 10w30 but after this last case on hand I'm switching to Mobile1 10w30 and whatever Napa or Wix filter matches the oil, been having Black oil issues from what I think is I used too much Moly assb lube so I have On Sale Valvoline 10w30 in it now to flush the moly out, 09 Ram Mobile1 5w20 after dealer oil changes (bought it new) & Napa Gold filters at 3-5K, 05 Express 2500 Napa 5w30 semi syn On Sale & Napa Gold filter at 3K or when it's dirty but recently changed to Mobile1 5w30 & AC Delco filter and at start up oil pres. went to 80 psi, swapped filters and still 80 psi and it's dirty after barely 100 miles, tried Amsoil MC oil straight 60 wt in my SFT Shovelhead and it leaked out everywhere :ROFLMAO: so back to whatever Harley sells 60 wt. and it stopped leaking, Harley 20w50 in my 06 FXSTFI Softail, and if Harley ever comes out with a model bike starting with LGBQ???? I'll have a Stroke

Synthetic oil doesn't go bad like conventional oil. It does get dirty and if it does, change the filter.
Changing synthetic before 15,000 miles is just throwing money away IMHO.
Toyotas go 300,000+ miles and they recommend 15k mile changes, and they are being conservative.

Your statement is generic and cannot be applied across the board.

I don't dare run my diesel on an extended oil change, the sheering of a 6.0L in the injectors destroys oil, even synthetic.

I don't want to argue about the best oil to use. I think synthetic is the way to go but there's lots of debate.

I'd like to know who has the best oil filter that's as large as possible and at a good price ? And can fit a BBC with headers ! :)

I found this Wix chart. Everything that's a 13/16" thread is SBC and BBC

Are there two different size filters for a SBC? Not height or diameter but the threaded part? When I went to change oil filter on the C10 for the first time the filter I bought wouldn’t fit but I found one in the garage sitting there for a decade for the Chevelle and it fit.

I don't think so.
Chevy went with the 13/16" thread and stuck with it for compatibility.

I personally would never use a Race filter due to giving up some filtering for flow. And I never buy a filter with a bypass valve. I also prefer one with wire mesh filter material retention and synthetic filter material. Then height would be my next concern for more capacity and filter area.

$14+ at Napa for a Napa Gold is getting a little pricey but in the long run it's cheap insurance, I'll do some online shopping for next time though to try to find the same Wix filter only less $
