Good RR maps of the are are surprisingly hard to find.
But I was able to confirm that the eastern states have LOTS of rail-road track.
So IF anyone with half a brain of more takes charge RR in the area should be making a comeback.
Sure it's going to be a PITA and more expensive but its also probably the fastest way to clear the logjam.
First thing is to get the wreckage cleared, no need to spend months "Investigating" we have it on video.
Crappy RR maps.

Many of the East Coast RRs are in disrepair plus many are divided by freight and passenger, especially the NE corridor. Amtrak is no longer cheap to ride, it once was and a great way to get from Baltimore to NY.
 
If it's anything like Oregon, they've removed most of the RR spurs in favor of light rail people transporters. That and the homeless are thick and moving them in favor of the supply chain would become headline news and deemed "targetted" to under-funded communities of..........wait for it..........color.
 
If nothing is done the whole area may begin to resemble Watts or E. Oakland in CA, real urban jungles.
I do not see it taking Seven Years to rebuild the steel portion of the bridge, IF they can resist a major redesign.
But freight is being blocked/diverted Now.
Haz-Mat is being stranded or having to go a very long way around.
Rail can be rebuilt very quickly, track laying cars are amazing.
Trucks could be moved around the bay on flat-bed cars, then resume OTR travel.
That would be a pretty quick "Short line" trip at minimal added expense.
It could also be done quickly, or is this another "Crisis" to be "Not wasted" in pursuit of some other arm twisting?
The importance of this port was one of the first things mentioned, it will be criminal if this is not addressed as efficiently as possible.
We already have a crap economy, this can ripple out and make it worse nationwide.
 
I find myself wondering, if Trump put out a plan to deal with this would Bidet' then refuse to allow any of his suggestions to be implemented?
 
I grew up in MD, family is from Baltimore. The East side of B-more is the industrial side, heck the B-more A body plant was once over there. The Key Bridge was built after the Harbor Tunnel and before the Fort McHenry Tunnel, my uncle helped to wire the Ft. McHenry Tunnel. There is another route option from the South, take I-97 to US 50 and across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and head north on 301 to I-95.

Speaking of the Bay Bridge, that is a target but since it is 4+ miles long and 2 spans it would be harder to bring down. The Key Bridge, if a terrorist attack, was the perfect bridge to cripple a city.
 
The ship may have belonged to Singapore, but I read an american captain was in control when it wrecked.
They need to find out why it lost power ??
 
The America pilot did drop anchor, but too little too late.
The question becomes WHY a ship with a dodgy engine ever left the dock?
I expect that once the bridge is rebuilt it will be a mandatory tug tow until well past the bridge.
 
The maritime law I read said backup power is mandatory.
This ship is single engine single screw, the backup engine application was not clear but is a requirement.
In the videos you can see it belch smoke and the lights come on when one of the engines fires up briefly, just before the crash.
Pilots names will become public once the formal inquiry gets underway.
Even if they are found to have done everything they could correctly, I expect their careers as "Pilots" are over.
EDIT: New information. One experienced pilot and an apprentice who was just watching. So only one pilot, which should have been enough.

From what I have seen reported the folk with the most to worry about are the company that was doing pot-hole repairs.
Seems they did not have a rescue boat standing by as required by law.
Of course if they did that boat might have been under the bridge.
 
You have to have a rescue boat to do pot hole repairs on a bridge? How incompetent would you have to be to fall off a bridge while fixing a pot hole?
 
Just commenting on the law as written.
Seems there is a worry of workers falling off bridges built over water.
Probably rare, but the requirement is there.
The contractor did not have a boat as required, there will be consequences for that.
