I want to blast and repaint. What color is this originally? If cast gray, what paint recommendations. Thanks

I have used a Details paint that comes out very close. Note: I live near Ausley's

I have some details in black. I found it not very durable. I was wanting a 2k or something along that line . I used 2k spray max and was happy. I didn’t find any other colors than the black and a 2k primer. I also found it took a lot of cans. I saw Eastwood had a 2k cast gray in a can. Not sure how good it is. Cast gray was mentioned on the ocs in Cain restoration. I did the springs in Eastwood cast powder so I assume color would be similar. I will also be doing more parts like sway bar and other steering components.

Details low temp has worked fine for me, the high temp stuff burns off too fast.

Thanks for all the input. Although black would look nice I also want to breakup the color. I also can across a lot of posts about using cast blast.

This topic has been on my mind. I’m not necessarily looking for strict factory original but at least want the look of at least “ it looks vaguely original.” Basically like the previous poster I want something to break up the black and not have it look like I simply spray bombed the engine bay semi flat krylon.

What items would be appropriate to have in cast grey? (I’ll probably paint them cast grey instead of clear coating bare metal).
Master cylinder?
Springs?
Tie rods, idler arm?
Center link?
Control arm shafts?
Any thing I missed?

Also idler arm. To add I think brake parts ( spindle, steering knuckle) minus calipers caliper bracket, backing plate.steering box are also natural. As for the master cylinder I think it was natural. This topic came up over at ocs awhile back andI don’t remember the result or if there was one. I did have my m/c refinished by brake booster and it came back black. Look great. Good luck with choosing. It’s one of the hardest parts for me. I’ve changed over almost everything I’ve painted or powdered and I’m not done. I need to a strip my steering knuckle of black powder. I’m working on tile this weekend, but when I get home I’ll take a picture of my springs coated Eastwood cast gray powder next to my bare part to maybe give you an idea. I added just one comment that may help. Thanks for commenting.

Disc backing plates are a gold oxide color.
are the backing plates the same as a dust shield? And isn’t it silver. I’m probably wrong there, but I haven’t painted them yet.

Actually they are a gold tint and if IRC the caliper brackets are too. Is your car a factory front disc car or 4 wheel drum?

Here is the idler arm and intermediate bar I have in bare. They are not finished still need some more cleaning then clear. The spring is in Eastwood cast iron gray powder. Not sure how the cast iron paint compares. I wish I would have done the springs bare, but they will stay powdered unless it bugs me. I already need to strip powder off some brake parts. They need to be a different color. I hope this helps you JohnC.

4 wheel drums were on it when I got it. The rear was swapped out at some time before I got it. It had/has a 10 bolt. Funny thing is it’s a coded 69 n/p 10 bolt with drums. Front had drums they were originally there. Riveted bolts. A few years ago I tracked down a coded 69 12, but it’s not exactly correct. Came from a 350 and n/p. Waiting to go in after a few changes (posi and different gears) and only part has been painted. As for the front, I started to redo my drums then came across a set of original 69 disk set-up from spindles to m/c and booster. I use to drive this car back in the day (92 last tabs) then it sat. Long story short I would like to put it back to as close as I can get it to the way it was. Of course not the exact numbers thing but numbers thing. It will be a garage queen as I will probably never have a license ( glaucoma). My first car I ever owned bought from my uncle. A basket case to start with but she’s alway been my love. Crazy how long I’ve moved it from house to house. City to city. One wife to another. I think it got attached to my hip.

Thanks. This helps. Some of my steering parts (spindles, backing plates) were powered coated black before I decide to care about it, so I’ll leave them that way.

I just ordered some Eastwood cast gray paint for some of the other parts.
