Portable Spray Booths

I purchased 2 portable spray booths, 1 for doing doors, fenders, hoods and such, and one for doing an entire car or truck. The small one is 13' x 8' x 8', and the larger one is 33' x 16.5' x 9.5' and has a prep room built on (6' x 16.5') so it makes the actual painting booth area 27' (or so).

The larger unit cost $862, and the smaller one cost $400.

Lisa and I set them up this morning to check them out, and now we are putting them away.

Here's the small one:

I like this. Heck, when you finally become dangerous to yourself, it's a new home. Nice work!

I checked out the CFM for the ventilation fan and it's way too low, so I'm upgrading (buying a much larger one) to push more air through.

I'm buying a 1500w unit (originally came with a 350w 300 cfm unit) that pushes 1,300 cfm, so based on the size of the large booth, it'll change all the air out every 2.75 minutes. It's the biggest unit I could buy without blowing the thing apart.

How does the air flow through? Front to back? What are you using to filter the crud from entering the room?

The air is blown into the prep room on the large one and the filters in the pic are what makes sure flies, crud, dust don't go into the spray area. The air exits through the side filters up front.

Needed to store the big paint booth, so I bought a 96 gallon trash can. Fit nicely and it can be moved around easier now.

I like them. How does it work when/if it rains? I heard some leak/drip from top?

I don't know, but I wouldn't be painting when it rains anyhow. This just solves a space problem for me. My original intentions were to build a 30' x 60' steel building and it was going to have a spray booth, but with the economy and uncertain future I didn't want to spend the 50k.

I've painted in my garage before and the smell permeates everything, so I decided it had to be done outside.

Very handy solution to someone who wants to paint periodically but don’t want to dedicate a lot of space and $$$ to a permanent booth.

When considering my options to paint at home I checked out CL to see if someone had bought and and was renting it out. No soap.

Some years back (maybe 3 or 4 years) a few on CL where I live used to advertise renting their professional spray booths out at body shops by the hour, but that was long before the pandemic and the economy was doing well. I suspect with the lack on new vehicles and everyone keeping their cars, body shops got a whole lot busier. I had considered renting the space, but it was before I was ready.

Position the fan next to the nasty neighbors property line and let her rip.

Yeah, that's not gonna happen, plus where I had it setup is where it'll be setup when I use it. I'll back the car out of the garage right into the booth, and when it's done drying, I'll pull the car back into the garage and collapse the booth.

Where I set it up it's about 175' from their house, so the fumes will carry, but that depends on the wind.
