Home Surround Sound System advice

I've been wanting to upgrade to a Dolby Atmos system. A good surround sound system for the living room.

Costco has what appears to be a great buy on a receiver - it's about $250 cheaper than Best Buy.

Is this a good way to go ?

Costco ($400) :

Features:

  • 7.2 Channel Dolby Atmos, DTS:X (5.2.2 Channel) with Zone 2
  • SMART Home WiFi Compatible with Voice Control: Apple Airplay, Google & Alexa
  • Dolby ATMOS, DTS:X and HDMI 2.1 for 8K60 and 4K120 video pass through
  • 6 HDMI Inputs and 2 Outputs (Main with eARC, Subwoofer)

Best Buy ($650) :

I have no advice to give on that unit, sorry.

I have a 4 channel matrix amp that can play different sources in 4 different rooms.

Not sure if that's of any interest to you, but if you want to listen to your stereo anywhere else in the house, that may be an option for you.

Always read reviews from multiple sources before purchasing. Denon, JBL, Yamaha, and Sony all make good units. Make sure that it will meet your needs (number of HDMI inputs, along with HDMI outputs & other connections).

I only crank up the volume in the living room :)
I have two good "generic" floor speakers and a yamaha subwoofer.
I will have to add some smaller speakers for the center and surround channels.
I'm hoping to match that "movie theater" sound.

One of the absolutely best movies for testing surround sound is Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Skip to the pod racing scene and let it rip.

^^^^ and Top Gun.
I'd never buy keeper electeronics from best buy. Talk to your local high end fidelity store and get their take. Read reviews, and go on forums. I'd trust Yamaha, but you're gonna pay up for it. I've got a Onkyo that was considered fairly middle of the road 5.1.....just quit one day, not a ton of use. Nobody will touch it, and it's not a fuse. So, it's junk imo. Don't let that happen to you.

What's the model?

I was at our local thrift store called Savers. They sell home good (along with clothes) and had some decent looking stereo receivers. A Harman Kardon receiver, looked really nice. Also Onkyo.
They had this big boy that I would have considered if I needed one.

By the sticker on the front looks to have some pretty modern features.
$25.

I ended up buying the 7 speaker surround sound Onkyo receiver.
I only needed a center speaker and two rear speakers to have a 5.2 system.
I might add two more speakers in the rear for a 7 channel system

Center ($100) :

I need two ceiling speakers to complete my Dolby Atmos surround system.
I was looking at 8" round speakers and there are two that are very popular and have good ratings.

Opinions ? Know of a really good speaker that's affordable (less than $100 each) ?

#1 ($44 each)

Our old house had Altec Lansing speakers built ino the wall in come kind of custom encloseures, one each side of the TV alcove and two in the ceiling in the middle of the great room that were there when we moved it. I added a 12" woofer and center speaker like the one shown, and along with a 500 watt Technics receiver, it would rattle the windows. I played Top Gun, and when the jets passed over, you would involuntarily duck!

I had Polk ceiling speakers (8 of them) in my last house. Clarity of the highs was unbelievably clear and the woofers would boom when pushed by the amp. I paid $300 for each speaker (not pair) when I got mine.

Grills aren't that hard to take off, you need to apply a little bit of pressure up because they have a lock position that keeps the grill tight to the ceiling and doesn't allow it to rattle.

Haven't installed the Polk ceiling speakers yet, but they look awesome.
I see the tweeters are angled so I see what Brian is saying about pointing them toward the listener.

I have a lot of rock concert blu-ray discs. Tips about getting real surround sound :
1) You need to go to the "settings menu" for your blu-ray player and set it to output whatever the disc is capable of.
2) And every damn time you play a disc, you have to go to "audio" and select the best surround option or you will hear plain old stereo !

I thought I had wasted my money until I figured that out !
