Can it be fixed? Computer shop said in order to fix it, I would have to buy a new mother board.

If I have a hardware failure I go to ebay and buy an equivalent PC and so what if there is no RAM or hard drive. I swap that stuff over, call Microsoft to reactivate the OS if needed and keep going. I will not buy a new PC.

I agree..buy a used one off ebay swap over your hard drive/memory or you can get to the mother board. But for the price to fix it unless you do it yourself better off buying another..

Just buy a motherboard ($69)

Do you mean the power-pack or the actual port where the battery plugs into the board?

Does the port look like the one in the pic Nashville posted?

Is it your battery?

I haven't taken it apart, don't know what it looks like inside. Don't even know how to get it apart other than pry the top off.
I have a feeling if I take it apart it will be going to the land fill.

Finger out what you want to do, then ship it (with whatever parts) to me and I'll fix it for you and send it back.

My kids were like that too until I told them "You break it, you fix it". All of a sudden they were taking care of their stuff, but in all honesty, there were in their early teens.

Usually when that port gets damaged, it was jerked hard because someone kicked the cord or took off with the laptop and forgot it was plugged in.
