My good friend and coworker bought a 302 built from a 4 bolt main 350 and real 302 crank, I drove him a cpl hrs away to pick it up but it was last year and now he wants to get ready to put it in his 63 Nova vert and asked me a few questions 1 being Flex Plate, would that be an Int or Ext balance engine and he’s going to use a 200-4R trans so what tooth gear? TIA Rick PS I asked him to get hold of seller that built it and ask bal

The little 302 would be internal balanced. He must have found a DZ crank, which is not easy to find, 1 year only. The flex plate can either be a 153 or 168 tooth, but get a SFI flexplate, a little more dough, but it'll have a nicely welded starter ring. The starter will be another obstacle if you go 168 tooth, but a good aftermarket, like a powermaster is a good choice and it's a breeze to install vs. the 80 lb oem units, and nice to work around headers. They are dual drilled so you can use them with either size flexplate. The only problem with them is when you use it with points ignition, as it doesn't have a 12v feed back to the coil, which on a points system is limited to 9 volts. I'm using this system on my jeep, and I wired a special feed to the coil which is manual while cranking the starter, but found it started just fine on 9 volts....it's something that's rarely discussed because not too many of us still like points.

I gave him an early HEI dist. that I'll be putting a Pertronix module and coil in cap together for the 350 that's in the car now since it's going in his 90? Chevy truck and the MSD small cap dist. that's in the 350 will go in the 302 for fire wall clearance, he has the car in a shop changing the front suspension to get rid of the shock towers and change the steering, that 302 is going to be a hand full in that little 63 vert, buddy of mine in the 70's put an L79 327 in an early SS Chevy II Nova with a 4 spd LOL

Why would you destroke an engine and then run an automatic ?
Z28's didn't come with automatics.
He won't have any low end torque ?

I told him that and will need a pretty high stall speed conv, I gave him the TCI 2,500 stall conv that I had when he thought about leaving the 350 in the car and adding a 200-4R, that would’ve been a good combo
