Soft Lifters

I was at my engine builders shop today and he had a customers 427 BBC on the dyno, customer supplied the Comp SFT cam & lifters kit along with their rec'd break in oil, yesterday at break in 30 sec in it went bad and ended up with 5 shorter lifters, IMHO beware flat tappet lifters that are recently made, BTW he said cam was fine

I stopped buying anything from Comp Cams years ago after I got a bent cam and it was like pulling teeth to get them to replace it.

Any flat tappet cam I break in now I use, 2 extra qts. of oil in the pan, the weakest main spring I can find and always use moly paste on the cam and lifters. Have not lost one cam in 20 years doing this running in the new cam at 2000 RPM for 30 minutes.

Good info! I have some Comp Cam parts for my L78 build but just accessory stuff (pushrods, magnum rockers, pushrod guides). My cam is Howards with solid flat tappet DL lifters, and Howards springs. Having a bit of a rough time finding a proper 6223 crankshaft. Reasonably priced cranks are hard to find & I won’t buy junk either.

Any cam I buy now is from STRAUB TECH. STRAUB TECH

Id rather buy from Chris and know what I'm getting. There are also a few good Cam Grinders still around. Ill never buy COMPCAMS again.

I'm thinking it's more of a problem with bad or soft lifters that can end up eating the cam lobes but that's just my opinion based on talking with my builder and what I've read, I'm pretty sure Straub doesn't sell flat tappet cams but I would buy a roller cam from him or flat tappet or roller from CamKing Mike Jones that I believe grinds his own cams on USA cores or the cam company that Vortecpro uses I think they're Redline..? I have 1 set of 1986 BBC hyd flat tappet lifters with 22,4xx miles on them that I think I'll be hanging on to just in case

I've used mostly Howard's cams and their cam saver lifters for the past few engines. They do use the good USA cores. They confirmed that for me a couple years back. Bought a Lunati and a Crane cam for 2 different 396 builds awhile back, but made sure to use the Howards lifters, both were hft. So far so good.
