Boy, that was fun.....

Holy cow. I’ve never seen a tire like that. It’s like every inch of the tire exploded at once.

Driving at 60mph I'm sure contributed to the way it looks now, but it was a hell of a bang when it let go, then all party after that.

Just ordered 5 Hankook Kinergy ST (whitewall) tires from TireRack.com.

Seems no one can get me tires even close (225/75R14) for this beast, so I had to order 215/75R14.

When they come in I'll have all 5 mounted and then put them on the car. Was going to wait to get new tires until after paint, but that shit went out the window today.

Hah!! you jogged a memory! Back in my late teens we had a dead end street we used as a dragstrip....cops knew it happened every weekend and just patrolled the major cross streets and let us be.
While caravanning a few cars and me on my KZ650, my front tire blew out going 50 or so. I was wearing my shit kickers and planted the left one down as hard as I could to stablize the ride. I was literally 3 legging it and ever so slowly drifting towards the rightside ditch at speed. Only applied a little rear brake but no front. FINALLY rode it to a stall after several seconds. My buddy behind me said sparks were flying 20 feet behind from my boot......nails were getting ground down. I was left with 1/4 inch or so of a 1 inch heel, no breath, and a cool story of survival. This was after dusk, so the fireworks were epic!

This is a huge issue with us classic hoarders.....keeping tires current and safe. I trust the real old bias ply tires and NEVER had one of those degrade, but the modern design and compounds just don't last......status quo. I keep a set of tires that I transfer from car to car for long trips for this reason. It sounds like you'll part ways with this car, so no worries, just puts you on a bit of a timeline to get it done and sell the car.

Yeah, it was just an investment and I don't really have a love for the car. Have to rebuild the power steering pump, put new valve cover gaskets on, tune it up, put the new stock dual exhaust on (had custom made from original olds specs), then onto the bodywork and painting.

Already bought all the new parts and have them sitting (except for the paint).

Hoping to have it done in 2 months (in between working on the house), then I'll list it for sale. Probably going to list it for $32k and take $30k. That'll be about a $19k profit.

I am running stock size tires on my Bronze Chevelle, should be 195/75 R14 but had to put on 205/75R14s in Hankooks because of availability and I like white stripes on that car with the hubcaps.

I had the tires mounted and spin balanced on Friday (all 5) and it was pretty cheap at $14 per tire. I did keep the original bias ply spare tire (unmounted) to go with the car when it sells. I saved 2 of the tires off the car (along with the brand new unmounted one that came with the car) to give to my brother for his cement mixer. He doesn't take it on the road, but he's tired of the old tires going flat.
