Matrix VS Wanda

Matrix looks like a Sherwin Williams product, and Wanda is Akzo Nobel A local jobber sells both, they are close in price, anybody prefer one over the other? I'll be using single stage urethane in 1970 code 10 white for a complete. I've used Nason Fulthane with good luck before, but no one near me sells it any longer, and PPG Concept, which I think is the best, is waaay out of my price range. I'd prefer to walk up to a counter and get it in person as opposed to mail order, that is why I'm looking at these.
Thanks.

Never heard of either. PPG is the golden standard and yes it's pricey. Locally here at the NAPA they mix and sell Valspar (didn't even realize Valspar had automotive paint finish line) and I'll be giving that a try when I shoot the Starfire, but I've never tried that one either.

Never used either. I've had good luck with PPG Omni in white, it's their toners that are weak. SPI has a line of white base also. You'd have to send for a few color chips as they don't match or label per application.
I plan on using SPI on my vette which is rally red.....they have enough variants to nail down the color.

As cheaper lines of paint I’ve seen really positive reviews of both Matrix and Wanda. I had actually planned to consider Wanda but my local supplier only sold the water based IIRC.

As Cheveslakr said SPI has a line of paints that people really seem to like. They don’t mix custom colors which is one reason I didn’t try them (I wanted Bolero red, not just a generic red) and they also don’t ship those paints to California (but they do send their other paints here). I like their stuff a lot but their fan base is almost a cult so I take their reputation with a grain of salt. I have used their stuff though and for the most part like it.

I am using Valspar base coat and have no issues with it. I would buy again. My problem is with getting my clear coat to lay down without Orange peel, but that’s not Valspar. The Valspar lays down no prob.

I looked at SPI as well, but want a stock color, that's why I'm looking at local places that have a mixing bank. I wish I had PPG money to spend right now.

Last time I bought base it was over $1000 per gal. for lumabase, house brand but upper end. Not sure what deltron is now, probably similar.

PPG COncept single state urethane in white would be around $1,800.00, with reducer and hardner.

Dating myself, when I first started painting Imron was the most expensive at the time and IIRC is was in the neighborhood of $500 a gallon. That was back in '79 or '80. My boss told me "Don't fuck it up or it's coming out of your pay". Talk about nervous.

I paid $600 for red Valspar base coat. I can’t compare because I’ve never sprayed red base before but I know it wouldn’t cover very well if I didn’t use a red tinted sealer.

The guy at the paint store saved my ass on that one by insisting I buy tinted sealer. Every other time I had priced it, no one ever mentioned the need to tint the sealer. If I had just sprayed over a white base I never would have been able to cover the whole car much less have a lot left over for respray and touch ups.

Ah, Imron! Its still out there, but seems limited to fleet use due to a variety of reasons. I had a black '74 Olds 442 done in Imron in the late '70's and it was hard and slick.
I'm not quite ready for final finish yet, and will keep looking into both the lines that I've asked about
Thanks.

Red is one of those colors that is hard to cover. Tinting the primer is always a safe bet with red (and white for that matter).
