6 Cylinder Engine question

So I'm helping a friend get his 69 4-door Malibu back on the road. The original engine was a 6 and has been gone for years so while looking for a replacement I'm finding it hard to find any (no, really... lol)

Can I look at a truck engine of similar years as a replacement, would there be any issues using one(like the oil pan, etc.)? What years should I be looking for? Hoping to find a 250 to bolt a 350TH behind.

EDIT: The owner wants to have a 6, so I told him I'd try.... that's the reason for this.

Thanx for looking!
-Raoul

The 250 was a cheap commodity several years back, but today most of them have been melted down. There are some complications swapping over to the 292 integral head but it's worth the effort imo. I've got a 230 in a van, and it's fresh, and good for around town but lacking on the highway.
A better carb, like a weber, and a good exchaust will help out. If he wants to hotrod it a bit, there's a couple really good youtube videos on them. The sound of a good running six is always satisfying.

Thanx for the reply... I was afraid of that. I warned the owner we'd probably end up with a V8.... now on to finding one reasonably priced and not needing a complete rebuild.

I'll post up some pix of this 'Project' later... you won't believe what I'm starting with!

What part of the country are you searching ?

A decent truck 6 cyl should have some good torque, oil pan & pick up, Exh manifold and maybe engine mounting could be different? Sounds like a Fun Simple? Project though 👍🙂

Georgia $500

Round Lake IL $350

Well the owner found a 307 with a TH350 in Iowa, supposedly rebuilt with 4k miles on it... We'll see. I was actually looking forward to installing a 6, would'a been different. Thanx for the 6Cyl links anyway, Nashville Cat!

First though is the chassis. We found a El Camino chassis up nort (Wisconsin) and it's being trucked in tomorrow. Then swapping the rear end from the original chassis (it's all bent up behind the rear end) and installing all the lines and a disk brake kit.

I'll get some pix tomorrow so you'all can see what's happening. You'll fall off your chairs!

Sounds like a ton of work ! Don't forget old cars that have sat for a long time need a new gas tank/sending unit.
