1966 Chevelle SS 396 Danube Blue over Black 360HP NICE!

Ok everyone, while perusing YouTube this morning I came across this very nice '66 Chevelle in the same color combo as my long gone '67 L78 Chevelle SS, and I'm quite smitten by it as you seldom see these dark metallic blue Chevelles these days! Danube Blue and Deep Water Blue are basically the same color as far as I know. They have this car listed for $79,500 and it's presented well.

So, what do you all think of the value of this one?

Thanks!

John

The upper end money is reserved for accurate restorations and well built resto-rods. They're asking top money for a car that needs a bit to get there. I'd say $60-$65k.

Just for fun, I might call the dealer and get more information on this one, like: car history, build sheet, trim tag, matching numbers?, etc.

I spoke with the dealer....seemed like a very nice guy & he shared what he knew about the car. It’s not the original engine but he thought it was date correct....appears to be the 360hp optional engine by appearance. They got the car from a well known collector of Chevelles and the car really shows well. The killer for me is the car was not Danube Blue originally ....Tahoe Torquoise with Vinyl Top he thought. I was going to get a pic of the trim tag until he told me that. M-22 Muncie in there....very clean car as I understand the collector is very particular about his cars. If I was seriously interested I’d likely offer in the $65k range and go from there, assuming the car is as nice as I was told it is. These days, I believe you’d be hard pressed to buy a nice clean ‘66 or ‘67 Chevelle SS for much less than $60k if even that! That’s my take!

This research does make me feel better about my recent purchase since I know the cars history and it’s mostly original throughout (which I prefer).

It is really hard to find a car originally painted Dark Blue Metallic! I know I’m biased but my old car in Deepwater Blue was simply awesome....that color is so gorgeous in person it’s hard to explain! 👍

I'm concerned the heads are rectangle port since it has a rect port intake.
That would be a real dog if it's got the 360 hp cam in it.

Beautiful 66 but IMHO not an $80K car since it's not the original engine or color, JMO, very nice looking and has all the correct options for me, $60K Tops

I'm running a square port intake on 272 oval port heads on a 427.....very responsive so far. Second cam, second body. I built it for my '55 which did mid 11s and a so so tune then changed the cam and went back to a single four rather than a tunnel ram. Lots of cars running around this way.

I realize lots of people do this because the Winters intake is so good looking.
But selling a 360 hp car, I would have used the Holley cast iron intake. It's excellent.
I'm more concerned about the heads. I think Chevy rectangle port heads suck, JMHO

My ‘67 L78 Engine Build is on hold, but if I continue with it I will have it pretty much bone stock complete with matching number 840 heads, 780 rebuilt Holley, Solid Lifters & L78 Rocker Arns, My Howard’s Cam (similar to stock L78 but with longer duration) and yes I will run it on Sunoco 100 to 110 Octane Gas! So, I’m perfectly fine with stock L78 Rectangular Port Heads.

But I’m just old school! There’s nothing like a stock L78 with large dia. headers! The power and sound heard & felt hasn’t left me over 5 decades later! 👍

I was talking about the combo of a small cam, street gears and those huge heads. Too many people put those heads on stock engines.

Understood! I was just venting about my love of things long past! I also realize today building an engine to run on pump gas is very different that the old days, but there are still some of us old guys who prefer the original design builds, as long as we can buy gas to run the things! But, with the cam I chose, I know for a fact that this engine will run on 93 octane, as a good Chevelle friend built his '69 L78 the same way basically (and he has helped me a lot!).

My current Chevelle is only the 325hp version, and I'm not fond of the Rochester Carburetor one bit! I miss my Holley!!! Here's a mock-up of my L78 Engine Build intake on my bench...sure is purdy don't you think? :)
