Dickey Betts

I agree with Kevin.....southern rock bands were the best at their peak. I don’t know too much about the Allman Brothers, however I’m a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan! RIP Dickey. Both great bands who did it their way!

RIP Dickey, a tatooist friend of mine got his autograph on the side of his rib cage and later that night went to his tatoo shop and made it permanent, I never met Dickey but did meet Dan Toler when he played in the band

Dickie Betts wrote "Ramblin' Man". I love the line "I was born in the backseat of a Greyhound bus, rolling down Higway 41" (which is in middle TN)
Ronnie Van Zant looked up to the Allman Brothers. He wanted to reach their pedestal.
He learned to write songs and as he learned, Lynyrd Skynyrd grew more and more famous.
And just as they were peaking, the plane crash ended it.
Ronnie never knew how much his music would be loved.

Also runs into Sarasota near where Dickey & Gregg and others lived, Dickey lived in Parrish & Osprey, a cpl yrs ago Dickeys wife was in the news for firing a shotgun (over the heads?) of a college rowing team on the river behind their house lol

Yup that is a great song! And Ronnie did credit the Allman Brothers in his love of their music. I will never forget while at work in civil engineering in my first job after college doing design & drafting work when I heard the horrible news of the plane crash in 1977. It’s a miracle anyone survived that.

I was in a small private plane traveling to Tallahassee on business on a foggy morning when we came close to landing into the pines when descending toward the airport. I was ignorant to what almost happened until one of the passengers who was a pilot yelled at the pilot and broke out in a sweat!

Rick,

There used to be a small restaurant in Osprey that had the absolute best grouper in the world....it was right on Sarasota bay in the then rural Osprey area where boaters could dock & refuel.

It was called “The Flying Bridge Restaurant”.

I probably missed learning about where those band members lived because my family moved in 1966....I returned to Sarasota after graduating from the University of Missouri in 1975.

I do wonder if any of those Allman Bros. band members attended Riverview High School?....not far from Osprey. I could look if any of them were in my medley?

I did a little research and Dickey passed away at his home in Osprey, FL. He lived on Sarasota Bay. It appears he was born in Miami(?) and attended High School in Bradenton, so he didn’t go to my High School. But, he obviously travelled much of the same roads as me since I lived and worked so close to Osprey. I did a large development in the 80’s called The Oaks that has an Osprey address..... beautiful area (exclusive).

Actually, it comes to mind that another famous band member lives in another of the developments I worked on not far from Osprey....the lead singer of AC/DC (Brian Johnson).

It’s really a beautiful area around there, about 6-8 months ago I did a new ac job in Ruskin and had to go to the nearest supply house Bradenton and it has really grown, I posted some pics of all the development but I dont have those pics anymore

Yeah, it brings back memories of stomping through the palmettos, etc surveying and designing the development around an active eagle nest in the Oaks development. When laying sewer lines I remember getting in the trench to show a young guy how to walk the sewer and compact it correctly. Well contractors don’t like some engineer showing them how to do things! LOL! That is a beautiful area. Even back in the early 80’s when the development was new the building lot next to the sewage plant was $100k or so! Water frontage lots were something like $500,000(?). Those are just land prices!! knew that development with its security entrance was gonna be expensive.
