The Motorhome Tear Out and Build Begins

Looks pretty cool Kevin. I’m asking because I don’t know, is torsional flex of the roof of any consideration?

If there is any it'd be very minimal. The main frame is 2 x 2 aluminum and I know there is some flex, but I don't think it'll be an issue at all. The wood attached to the aluminum frame stabilizes much of the MH.

I guess it’s safe to assume that the solar panels will also lessen the heat transfer between the cabin and the roof.

How much do the panels weigh?

Not really sure, but I'd have to guess around 40lbs to 50lbs each.

It was a concern originally adding that much weight to the roof, but spread out is disperses the load evenly.

I have lightened the load considerably stripping alot of stuff out, so I'm guessing I'm about 500 lbs under the original weight of the MH even with the panels on the roof.

Not really, what they do is block UV in those areas, but the heat transmitted from the panels underneath is quite a bit.

I'll be putting on Henry's Tropi-Cool which is a silicone sealant which lessens the absorption of heat. From what I've read, it should lower the temps by 10 degrees.

Hurry up and get that thing on the road. America is waiting!!

I'm going as fast as I can..... Lisa is about 1/2 way done packing the house. We'll hire movers again to put it all in storage for now.

The real estate market is slowing, so I'm trying to get it on the market as fast as possible (without killing myself). Hoping to have the house on the market between June 15th and June 30th.

I suspect we'll get offers rather quickly, but really hoping for a cash sale so we can get on the road, otherwise we have to wait for closing before we leave.

I understand.

Events in my life are making me think, we are not as financially stable as you are but you only live once and need to take advantage of every moment. This road trip has opened my eyes to new possibilities. With both of our jobs in uncertain territory it is time to examine new options.

Financial stability is only part of it, sanity is a major part. I'm no where near as financially stable as I'd like to be, but since we only go through life once, last year when Lisa had her medical issue, it made me step back and really take a hard long look at everything and clarity I hadn't had in a very long time. Sometimes it takes a life altering event to open your eyes and really look to see what's most important.

I'd been killing myself for a very long time and not spending as much time with Lisa as I should have and taking things for granted and being selfish. I will not take for granted what I have in my life and I will not squander my time with her.

Ran the solar wires from the roof into the basement (where all the solar equipment will be). I sealed the wires going into the roof as a precaution in case one of the solar gland fails and starts leaking. I'll install the solar glands later today when the silicone sealant dries a bit.

My design was to put all the solar glands under one panel as the panel will block the UV, and also to make it look aesthetically pleasing (and my OCD kicked in like usual so it has to be tight and buttoned up nicely).

Love following your progress. Thanks for sharing.

Then you'll probably appreciate a new thread I'll be starting soon for building our new barndominium. We close on our new property (just 2.75 acres) next week in Chiefland, Florida (about an hour north of where we live now).

It'll include from land clearing all the way through us getting our CO. This will be the first time in our lives that the shop will be way bigger than the house and it'll all be in one building.

I've waited all my life to have a killer huge workshop with room to move around in and work. I think that excites me the most.

Started tearing out the front area for new ceilings and rewiring..... also installed a Wineguard 360 OTA antenna inside the front fascia as I don't want anything on the roof besides solar panels. Had to cut the top of the hat off and I cut a slice in behind where the TV will be (hidden area) so the omnidirectional antenna won't be seen. Tested the antenna and it worked surprisingly well and picked up 12 channels over 70 miles away.

This morning I pulled all the excess wiring out for stuff I didn't want, wired in the dash radio to run off the house batteries instead of the coach batteries, figured out the previous owner installed a wireless RV backup camera which not only sucked (poor signal and picture), but wired it into the coach batteries so it stayed on all the time (leaching power and killing the coach batteries). So I pulled out that camera system and ordered a new wired one.

The seals on the main slide out were falling off, so I figured I'd replace them with new seals, took the slide out awning off only to find out some idiot used a butyl type caulk that was sticky and was pulling the seal off every time it opened and closed. So, today's project is to scrape all the butyl seal off, clean it, reseal it with a silicone based caulk, let it dry, then put the new rubber seals in. What a monster pain in the ass. I hate cleaning up other people's messes and stupidity. I figure if they sealed the main slide out this way, I'm betting they did the same to the bedroom slide out. Luckily I bought all new seals for everything.
