Building Our Barndominium

Good luck let us know. I hate dealing with people but in your case it is a necessary evil. Just like anything else I guess you have to sift through the shit to find the gold.

Yeah, the bad part is my brother worked with this guy for like 20 years (my brother is a licensed mechanical engineer) and did many projects for this guy for free for his family and my brother asked him to reciprocate.

My brother wanted to call him up and rip him a new one, but I told him not to bother.

You should let your brother have at him. With those kind of people, sometimes it helps them to have their hypocrisy pointed out to them. He takes a job from your brother for free, then can't even treat you reasonably. Maybe he doesn't even know that he's a major jack ass.

My brother is respecting my wishes, but he did tell me he won't work with him again. He pissed my brother off bigtime.

Put in for zoning this morning and expect to get approval in about 2 weeks (about the time the plans come back from the architect), then we'll submit the plans for permitting (which should be approved in about 2 to 3 weeks).

The land clearing guy is starting on Wednesday morning and should take 3 to 4 days to clear and level, and the well guy is slated for 1.5 to 2 weeks so we'll have water on the property.

After we get the permit, I can put in for a temporary power pole and get the concrete guy rolling.

Yesterday we closed on our new property in Chiefland, Florida. I'm retiring (really just semi-retiring because I can never truly stop working), but my company also does hosting services so we'll have a positive cash flow for years to come and I'll cut back my "work" to 5 hours a week or less.

We were seeking a sleepy quiet little town with low crime and not much growth, and far enough away from big cities much like the town I grew up in (Somers, CT).

Yesterday following closing we met with a land clearing guy and he'll start clearing early next week. The land is heavily forested with mature trees 50' and taller where we'll only clear what we need.

I've also already contacted and contracted with well and septic system companies.

We are finalizing plans for our building which will be 30' x 90' (with an additional 30' x 10' lanai) for an overall footprint of 30' x 100' where we will have 1,080 square feet of conditioned living space leaving the rest for my shop (1,620 square feet). The 300 square foot lanai (covered porch) will be off the living quarters. My shop will have four (4) 10' x 10' roll up doors with two (2) lifts (one for storing cars, and the new one will be for working on cars). We are waiting for the architect to finish drawing plans for the living quarters and then we can submit the plans to the county (Levy County) for approval, then we can pull the permits and start the actual building. We are shooting to have our current house on the market around June 30th (when my final service contract is slated to end barring any complications) where we will move our motorhome (BAB's aka "the battle cruiser") onto our new property and begin living in it until the building is complete, but not before we take our long overdue nationwide vacation trip to see our nation. After the concrete slab is poured we'll have 6 to 8 weeks before the steel building is erected and that's when we'll take our 4 to 5 week trip to see the USA.

Next week I'll start taking pictures (before and after) of the land clearing and this will become a living thread chronicling the progress of our build and the beginning of my retirement.
I don't know how I missed this. Sounds really nice. Share some pics as it moves along please.

Holy crap surveys have gotten expensive. I must have called 10 places and most were either booked until October, or not taking on any more work. McMillen Surveying was the only one who'd return a call and actually quote me a price and when I asked them why it was so high (all the surveys I've ever paid for were between $300 and $500), she said they are so overbooked that they hired other contractors to work for them and most of the places I had called are 1 or 2 guys and not able to keep up, whereas they are a larger company and can.

End result was the survey is going to cost $1,250 (just a boundary survey), and will get done sometime the week of July 18th.
