Recommended 5 Speed transmission

Sleeper '69

Active Member
I've got a Muncie 4 speed transmission in my '69 BB Chevelle Malibu. Its got Flow Master mufflers on it and it's too loud at cruising speed for my wife to even ride in it. I'm wondering/thinking that a 5 speed tranny would reduce rpms and reduce drone. Any 5 speed recommendations without cutting floor? I could also change mufflers but I like the low end rumble.
Thanks

There's only 1 choice, the Tremec THX. You can get the correct shifter location, working speedo and backup lights through various vendors. Probably have to change your driveline and rear mount as well......I'm days away from buying 1 myself, just deciding on gears. They offer a wide ratio, 3.27 1st gear or a "close" ratio 2.87 first.....with 3 choices of overdrive. If your rear gear is 3.07 or lower numerically, I'd go with the wide ratio. Great value on these, and the trans guys are giving this tranny great reviews.

I went with the 2.87 1st gear and .68 OD. I think it's by far the most popular choice.
My rear gear is 3:73

I'm pretty set on .81 OD with the 2.87 1st.....the car has 3.36 rear gear. Mine puts me at 2.73 true ratio 5th, yours puts you at 2.56.....both work well with a cam that'll clean up at just above 2k.

Why not put a set of 3:73's in it ? Makes a manual more fun :)
And you don't have to burn the clutch on takeoff

9.6 1st gear is exactly what I want. I've had mostly manuals throughout my life and to me, anything numerically higher than this is not ideal, nor is anything lower. If I was trying to max my 60ft. track times, I'd go to a 10.5 first, but that's not where this car is focused. My '66 has a 10.8 first, way too low for the street.

I didn't build my car for racing. Pretty much street use. I'll admit I baby the crap out of her. When I feel the need for seat of the pants speed I take out the Infinity. Do that occasionally. Like most of us, I've got too much money tied up in this car in original or period correct parts to thrash on it.

77cruiser what did you replace your flow masters with and are you satisfied?

IDK, if a Chevelle is built with good parts like a TKX trans and Moser/S60 rear end, you will never break anything on street tires.
There's always someone faster ; I just want my car to keep up with the new Camaros and Mustangs.

I had true dual Flowmaster 40 series on a 96 Ram truck with a 318 that drove me nuts at cruising, to loud if I was driving late at night, I had a muffler shop add Turbo muffs at the end of the exhaust then it was good and no loss of seat of the pants power, I'll never buy Flowmasters again, using Pypes muffs now

A little spendy, but Borla XSPro is what I used on the '69, 3". I ran 3 inch head pipes and necked them down just after the muffler, running 2.5" tails. Love the sound and they really come alive with foot pressure.

3 in inlet and 3 in outlet and 22" long case

That's the one's I had.

I had these when I had the other engine with 2 1/2 in. ex.

I have Dynomax Ultra Flo's and love em. Flow-killers are known for their drone. My other favorites are Spintechs and Borla's

Thanks for all the help people. Looks like it's going to be Tremec TKX as soon as weather permits. Do that first then decide on mufflers. As 77cruiser said he only time Flomasters sound 1/2 way decent is at idle. I could listen to that low rumble all day.
