Recommended 5 Speed transmission

I went with the 2.87 1st gear and .68 OD. I think it's by far the most popular choice.
My rear gear is 3:73
I was about to pull the trigger and thought it best to go spin the tires and recheck gear ratio.....they're 3.73 instead of 3.36 like I presumed...............went with the .68 o.d. which will put my rpms at 2210 at 70mph. I like that. Ships Friday.

If you don't mind how much did the TKX set you back ? I won't get PO'ed if you want to keep the $$ private. I'm up in the air about whether to rebuild the Vette ls5 that I picked up or upgrade my 4 speed to a 5 speed. Knowing the price might help me make the better decision

Nobody gives a discount to my knowledge. Shops make their real money selling the conversion kits, shifters, crossmembers, etc.
I paid $2795 2 years ago + tax, so it was around $3000.
A 66-67 Chevelle needs an offset shifter to use the stock console and that cost $325. It moves the shifter forward and to the left.

I have to either rebuild or replace trans anyway. It jumps out of gear when I let off the gas in 4th so I don't let off the gas and idle it. What I do is I just feather the throttle and use my clutch foot on the brake pedal that little extra RPM keeps it in 4th and holds it from jumping out of gear. 2nd gear is a different story on a full throttle blast it will sometimes jump out in 2nd but 1st and 3rd are fine.
Plus its an M21 with a 3:31 rear gear anyway so it's a clutch eater by design.

Mine is also an M21, I had my Jag IRS built with 3.92 gears.
Should get me off the line OK with my puny little 327, then the OD for cruising down the road.

I just put a Gear Vendors in the truck a few weeks ago. It's amazing.

CONs from what you currently have or thinking vs the GV.
1. Possible bump clearancing in the tunnel. (if interested, I could send you the template in the kit I got to get you close)
2. GV is only in a .78 and not the .68 you're looking at.
3. Shortening the drive shaft, (if you don't already for the TKX).
4. wait time for the GV. I think about 8-10wks?

PRO
1. Everything you currently have stays in place. No dropping the trans, realigning the clutch, changing shifters or shifter positions.
2. The cost of $2900. Thats ALL IN. Cost of shipping and tax is already included.
3. No other cost to the GV like the TKX (e.g. new offset shifter, Console?, clutch plate, ...) I don't know what else you're chaanging.

Yeah, Tremec has put a stop to the deals... I had several friends get really good deals on T56 Magnums through a vendor as somewhat of a sponsorship deal.
I waited too long and had to pay list price, so they gave me the shifter for free.

Not done yet. Frame modification required.
But yes that is part of the project.
So I will have all wheel disc brakes and IRS.
Of course this complicates the build making it even slower.

Hey folks. Been awhile. Want to thank all of you for the help and advice. Likely saved me $3k. I bought the Dynomax Turbos from Summit . I won't be ordering the TKX 5 speed. My car sounds friggin awesome. It's a joy to drive.
Thanks again,
Jim S

Well, as you may or may not recall, my initial goal was to reduce the drone. I thought by reducing rpm that would reduce drone. After you guys mentioned the muffler solution i thought that would be cheapest step and i would do that first. I can always do the TKX later. I'm so pleased with the new sound, I don't think I need the extra gear. When i get used to this change I still may do the TKX anyway.

Take a look on line, I just read a few weeks ago that there is now a 5 speed Muncie that uses a new case that looks like a 4spd Muncie. Pretty cool but a little spendy.
