2005 Ford Excursion 6.0L

Crap radiator started leaking on me, at least it was in the garage. Old radiator was a Mishimoto, when I removed the transmission cooler lines the cooler fell into the radiator, I guarantee you that is where it was leaking.

About complete with the Excursion "mini" restoration. I finally think the A/C is fixed, the front evaporator core, drier and orifice tube has been replaced, 35 degree air, hopefully now it will handle Death Valley heat. While in there my guy replaced the passenger side valve cover gasket. easy job with the air box out. I do have to make a hot water valve modification by modifying the vacuum lines, should be easy.

Tires, have to get tires.

You going there, Death Valley?

Excursion has completed about 6000 miles on the cross country trip and she decided to remind me she is almost 20 years old.

As I mentioned in the other thread we were driving through Eastern AZ and and I saw black smoke on pulls and not long after the CEL popped on. We were near a town so I pulled into an Autozone and found a great parking place, ran the ForScan codes using my laptop, EGR code and a Crank shaft Position code.

The Autozone had the crank sensor and I was told the entire repair took 3 hours to do, dang connector was a PITA to access, had to pull starter wires off the starter and remove them for access, what took so long was the connector would not unplug.

We took off again for Carlesbad, still blowing black smoke at take off, got to the campsite really late.

I have been on the Ford Truck Enthusiast site for years and posted an I need Advice thread. A well known on the site, Ford Tech replied, I sent him ForScan screenshots and other info. His advise was to replace the Intercooler to Tube CAC boot, Exhaust Back Pressure sensor readings were off, replace it and clean the EBP tube (easily done with carb cleaner and a trimmer string). I also cleaned the EGR valve, then I took her on the road to blow the turbo out. The VGT solenoid will swing from 85 to 15 depending on the boost need, I made it swing all the way a few times to free the variable venturi. I know the issue is turbo related because on normal driving the truck does great. I ordered all of the parts though OReillys and they arrived in the store the same day.

Been trying to fix things that went wrong on the trip. Installed a replacement mirror right side, old one got broken from road debris in Utah.

Replaced turbo hose from CAC to Turbo with Ford OEM, and used Ford clamps, not jobber stuff.

Purchased a Ford Crank sensor to replace Auto Zone one I installed in Arizona, waiting for cut on my hand to heal from when I replaced that one.

Ordered a new keyless remote, my old one went haywire.

Went Deer hunting today. Happened a mile from the house, after calling insurance company I went home, got a cone along out and pulled the bumper. We continued on to Thanksgiving Dinner. My elderly parents were with us.

A normal car would have been towed away, not the Excursion.

I have $0 ded comprehensive coverage. When I talk to a body shop I am going to see what it will run to have the hood and roof painted.

But the deer went flying up, hit and scratched the hood and roof.... when my son had an accident his insurance adjuster came to look at his car and I told him that the damage on the hood was due to pieces of the other car coming off and scratched the hood.... he looked at me and I said, "Just put it down, it's getting dome too"..... they paid for it. 😁

Would love to but unfortunately the NC sun has taken its toll on it.

If it would have been a car I am sure it would have taken out the hood, it was a 55 MPH hit.

Looks like most OEM parts are available except for the metal paint to match bumper. Fortunately it did not damage the headlight (less than 1 year old and now discontinued). I am still trying to figure out one part number behind the upper bumper filler .I want to have my ducks in order when I meet with the adjuster.

I'm sure you already know you're going to have to fight to make sure they use OEM parts because most insurance companies say right in their policies they will use after market parts when available. They tried to do that with my son's car and I told the adjuster the car was less than 1 year old and they would be using only OEM parts. He didn't like that, but the body shop and I had an understanding that only OEM parts would be used and they agreed.

In NC the law states:
§ 58-36-95. Use of nonoriginal crash repair parts.

(a) As used in this section, the following definitions apply:

(1) "Insurer" includes any person authorized to represent an insurer with respect to a claim.

(2) "Nonoriginal crash repair part" refers to sheet metal and/or plastic parts – generally components of the exterior of a motor vehicle – that are not manufactured by or for the original equipment manufacturer of the vehicle.

(b) An insurer shall disclose to a claimant in writing, either on the estimate or on a separate document attached to the estimate, the following in no smaller than ten point type: "THIS ESTIMATE HAS BEEN PREPARED BASED ON THE USE OF AUTOMOBILE PARTS NOT MADE BY THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER. PARTS USED IN THE REPAIR OF YOUR VEHICLE MADE BY OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER ARE REQUIRED TO BE AT LEAST EQUIVALENT IN TERMS OF FIT, QUALITY, PERFORMANCE, AND WARRANTY TO THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER PARTS THEY ARE REPLACING."

(c) It is a violation of G.S. 58-3-180 for an automobile repair facility or parts person to place a nonoriginal crash repair part, nonoriginal windshield, or nonoriginal auto glass on a motor vehicle and to submit an invoice for an original repair part.

(d) Any insurer or other person who has reason to believe that fraud has occurred under this section shall report that fraud to the Commissioner for further action pursuant to G.S. 58-2-160. (2003-395, s. 2; 2006-105, s. 1.6.)

Repairs to a vehicle may be necessary as a result from a claim on your own policy as a “first party claimant” or from your claim on someone else’s liability policy as a “third party claimant” for damages for which the person covered by the policy becomes legally responsible. In either circumstance, the insurance company is responsible for the costs to repair your vehicle. The insurance company may recommend a repair shop; however, you have the right to select the repair shop of your choosing. The amount determined by the insurer to be payable under the policy, will be paid regardless of whether or not you use the recommended repair service. No insurance company shall require the use of after-market parts unless the part is equal to the original part in terms of fit, quality, performance and warranty. Any modifications made necessary because of the use of after-market parts shall be included in the estimates.

About $1400 damage, not horrible. I am going to talk with the shop tomorrow. If I knew how to paint I would fix this myself. I may try to make a deal and see if they will spray the bumper and trim for me and I do the rest myself.
