Mailbox Hit

Well, I can only surmise, but I think the guy driving his truck at 5:20am must have been drunk, so there was a loud crack and I saw him drive by and as I suspected, he hit our mailbox. Pretty sure his truck mirror was what hit it.

It's the second mailbox on the street this last month to be hit.

Time to weld a very thick metal pole and base up.

I had a welding friend whose mailbox kept getting knocked down by a neighbor because of the position of the driveway, he made one so rigid that when it was hit, it stood up and the car took a lot of damage.

Nope, been down this road before. I put in a steel pole and welded a mailbox to the top and was then told by the cops (in CT) if someone hits it and gets hurt, I can be sued because the mailbox and post didn't break away.

That Fucker. Someone owes you a new mailbox & an apology. If I had to guess, your new mailbox will be "Built Back Better."

I just told Lisa that if I catch the fucker I'll punch his fucking lights out. I used my metal skills and straightened it out, but the bad part is I just figured out my spot welder shit the bed, so I had to use self tappers to hold it together.

Then make one that will break away but do substantial damage to the offenders car. I have a large 4x4 post, support buried 3' into the thick Carolina red clay, just put it in a few months ago. The old box was there for 20 years with no issues.

Maybe try a White mailbox. It's less racist.

Lisa said, "Well, the black mailbox supports the black community". Last house we had a white mailbox and it got dirty often and I had to wash it about every 6 months, so we went black this time.

Mine is a 4x4 post as well, and it's a full 8' post buried 3.5' down.

I'd paint the post Fluorescent Yellow or what about using contact cement spray glue and reflective tape?

Why would a mailbox have to brake away? What a out all the brick encased mailboxes where all you can see is the door. It is a residential street after all.

As the cops in CT explained, if the mailbox and post don't have any give and someone hits it, it'll be catastrophic as the vehicle would come to an abrupt stop, versus the the break away would do just that and cause less bodily harm.

In the case of a brick encased mailbox, if you hit it with a sledgehammer (1 strike), you'd see it pretty much break apart, and thus if a car hits it it'll break into pieces (break away so to speak).

Mine swings away if hit but many years ago someone either hit it & was hanging out of the windshield or they took it. The upright was there but the arm & box were gone, never found it.
Funny thing was a deputy sheriff stopped at the house & asked if I knew my mailbox was gone. I didn't.

Mailbox swings. What is so funny if a box is so reinforced the bat bounces off of it and busts a car's rear window glass.

My mailbox post is wood on the outside but covering a piece of 4 " angle iron buried 3 feet in the ground. Mailbox is across the street from neighbor's driveway. The mailbox post has 5 maiboxes. Two teen age boys routinely (3) backed into the post and broke it. My other neighbor, who was very annoyed built the post. You could tell from the wood it had been hit againb but nothing serious to the post. 20 years later and mailboxes are still standing. Also, kids are grown and gone..

Kevin, What if you had a metal post buried but only stuck up from the ground 12 - 18 inches. Enough to take out the under side of the car (oil pan) but wouldn't stop the car.

That'd work. I could do that down the road next time we have an issue. We're pretty rural so it's definitely a neighbor (someone within a few miles) so I can only guess they were on their way home from drinking.
