Looking for Advice for Tires on my 1967 Super Sport

Did all Chevelle Super Sports in 1967 come with red line tires? Mine did...they were not optional. They were all F70-14's. Later on, I did run raised white Goodyears (wide ovals) as I recall...still F70-14's. I ran so many wheel & tire combinations back then I forget where they all went....I believe, once I went into the Army, my Dad junked everything left off my car - as I had sold the car. Never remembered to ask him what he did with everything off my Chevelle. :(

Anyway, my current '67 Super Sport has front discs from the factory, so I believe my current 14" x 6" factory rally wheels are rather rare, but I'm trying to decide which tires to buy when the time comes. I have the white lettered Goodyear Eagle ST's on there right now, P215 70R14's on the front, P225 70R14's on the rear. I like them, but of course these tires are something like 20 years old!

I like red lines but I'm not gonna spend over $1,200 for just the tires alone! I like the staggered sizing that I currently have but I know my choices will be limited on 14-inch rally wheels.

I prefer the stock look but is there even anything out there these days?

Thanks for any suggestions,

John

Personally I think the white letter tires take away from the look of the rims and car. I'd go with blackwall tires, but stagger them in size (narrower fronts, wider rears). You'll need to keep the tires at the same height or close to it as the speedo will be off.

I would go with 15 X 8 rims, 4.5 to 4.75 backspace with 245/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear.
Radial TA's are about the only decent tire available in these sizes. In the 70's, rally wheels with white letters were the style and I think they still look great.
You have to step up to 17" to get any selection at all.

I like those sizes, however if my rally wheels are date coded per my car's build (i.e. original to the car) I'm gonna have a tough time not using them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in 1967 I believe only the Corvette & Impala (full size Chevy) came with 15" rally wheels w/disc brakes. The others had 14" rally wheels if disc brakes were optioned. My car is very original & that's the main thing holding me back from altering things, but I realize I may not have any choice.

Can 15" x 8" rally wheels be found, or repros any good?

If you want to jump up in size, there are wheels available:

These wheels from Vision come bare (as most of them do), so you have to purchase the center cap and trim ring separately.

Tires are a bitch..... they last 5-7 years and you may only have a couple thousand miles on them...so I keep aftermarket wheels and swap them to whichever car I'm driving. Your 67, I'd probably go black wall in the 225/70-14 if they still make them.

I just remember everyone switching to 15" x 8" Corvette rallys back when they came out in 1969. It was a big improvement in handling.
But the offset was 1/2" too much toward the fender lip. Later wheels corrected this.
Here's a list of all the wheels at Summit that are 15X8, 4.5 to 4.75 backspace. The rallys are expensive ($162 ea)

Some good info.....thanks everyone! I may also find the sizes I like and if they are raised white lettered I can always spray black and turn the lettering inward! Back in the day I did that at times.

I’m leaning toward black walls, 215 70R 14 front & 225 70R 14 rear just like what is on there now (size wise) as the stance looks good to me and I keep the original wheels. Could do red lines “if” the price ever goes down (which is doubtful sadly).

I think your Eagle ST's look great. I had those on my car back in 1988.
Too bad they aren't available anymore.

Thanks! I think that’s one reason I noticed the car on Hemmings originally. I had no idea at that time they were “old”! Ha! But, on the good side, I believe it’s more proof my car has been loved and stored inside between car shows and rides in good weather for many years!

I guess I'm the one dissenting vote. I think Radial TA white letters will look much better than blackwalls on a 14" tire.
Blackwalls look better on narrow sidewalls like 17"+ wheels IMHO.

I'm a sucker for Redlines on a 65-67 Chevelle. I've been desensitized to the cost of tires, so I would just buy what you want.

I also love the look of repro bias-plies, but completely understand the desire for radials.
